Talking Jim Saubier made it to Montana and saw a few rodents, most of which didn't suvive.

Weather was typical Montana spring stuff. We saw some Sun, some overcast, some rain, some snow, mostly all at the same time. Still it was a beautiful day, we even got a little shooting in.
We took my firearms cause Jim isn't set up yet, an Anschutz .17 HMR and a CZ .17 Fireball forming cases made the cut.
Here's Jim with his first Montana Gopher (bad day to be Skippy!). That's a cut down Anschutz MPR in .17 HMR. Great truck gun.

We had a bull rockchuck decide he needed to commit suicide by .17 Hornet. It's to early to shoot many but because it was a male Jim decided to help him on to a better place. He was chest facing forward and a 20 grain Mid-South Varmint Nightmare Extreme at 3,450ish FPS in a case forming load just flipped the switch on him, his tail didn't even twitch! As I understand it that was Jim's first ever rockchuck.

I figure connecting with your first shot on two different rodents species in a new state has to be a good omen and bode well for the future .

Beautiful pictures, good to see our host close up too.
Jim: Enjoy Montana, it's a big state you'll never get to see it all.
But, please do try, you'll see a whole lotta country.
Keep those warm clothes handy no matter what time of year.
Thanks for sharing with us Doug

Default Great pics!

Thanks for sharing Jim's first hunt in the new home state. Looks like he picked a great time to arrive.
So Doug, you Tom Sawyerd him into doing your case forming for that 17 Hornet.
Looks like you had a great day, but a bad day for rodents.
Best
Larry

Default great time

After arriving a week ago I have been running crazy with the new job, new location, etc. so it was quite a treat to get some time afield with Doug. The weather was questionable for gophers but we decided to give it a go just because we wanted to and it worked out just fine. I had plenty of opportunity before it took to snowing and blowing. We saw a bunch of rock chucks that will be waiting patiently for their turn, hopefully at distance with some big 20 cals.

i sure appreciate the hospitality by Doug, what a terrific guy to help out a new guy that would otherwise not have found shooting like this.
