.17 Rem 29gr Woodchuckden
A little .17 Rem group therapy with H4895, 29gr Woodchuckden, br4, nosler brass, .005 off lands. Don't have a chrony and the public range I use is about to close up through the warm months so the 21.6gr load will have to do for the summer.
Similar results with 24.0gr of H414. Not too happy with the factory barrel on this 700 VS, figure I'll shoot it out and then have it blue printed and spin on a 26" Lilja. Happy shooting! |

I think you are on the right track. The 414 group is nice, best powder with my .17 Remington was Winchester 760 which is 414. Lots of other people had excellent luck with 25.6gr under a 30gr bullet. I now am shooting a 17-204 with 30gr Nagles, you should try them, really nice bullets. I am using BR4's and 28gr of Winchester 760, 28.5 gr gives hard extraction. Larry

17 REM Don't over look IMR 4007SSC
I have two 17 Remingtons that I shoot Todd Kindler's 30 grain Gold Bullets with IMR 4007SSC Powder. Both guns are stock Remington 700's with only Rifle Basix triggers added. I'm getting 3700fps (3/8" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 Classic and 3670fps (1/4" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 BDL. Tested on 75 & 80 degree days with no pressure problems.... It just a GREAT load for the 17 Remington....

Trotter,
I plan on ordering some Nagel 25's and 30's in the near future. My plan of building a 17-204 was slowed by the purchase of a Les Baer AR. Can't wait to get that project started though. Russell, The first load I tried out of this gun was your recommendation of 4007ssc, 25.5 produced the best results but I haven't been able to duplicate that load since I first shot it. |

I think max load for Winchester 760 is listed at 27gr in a 17 Remington, not sure that will fit in the case, but I would start bumping you load of 760 up, both my 17 Remington and the 17-204 shot better the faster they went. Larry

Larry, I've gone up to 25.5 with h414 with about 3/4" groups and started seeing the primers crater. This Nosler brass has noticeably less capacity than the Remington, a lesson I learned the hard way when I followed suggested loads for aa2700 and had a primer blow! After that I'm gonna play it safe until I get a chrony.
Thanks! |

That right there is a useful piece of information.

You should find out how fast they are going, but my guess with that load would be about 3,500fps. Could be a good reason to use Remington brass. Larry

I ended up with 21.7 grains of H4895/30gold in my 17R with 18.5" barrel. It's the same group size as yours.
