.17 Remington Questions
Hi guys. I'm currently having a .17 Remington built on a CZ527 action and need to get my head around a few things with the calibre.
First off, I keep reading about powder choice being more important in these little guns? Needing to be clean burning to minimise fouling in the little bore seems to be the most common, along with the idea of using cooler burning powders to extend barrel life? I was considering using Varget or H335. Are they any good? Second, is there really much in it between 25gr V-Max and 25gr Berger Varmint as far as quick fragmenting expansion is concerned? I like Berger bullets but everyone raves about the V-Max. Last of all, brass. Norma or Nosler? |

I started working with Nosler brass this summer and I like it. The case capacity is a little smaller than Rem though.
The only powder I've ever really used is IMR-4320...the ol' standby. |

17 Rem
I have shot that cartridge for about 15 years.
The "go to" powder for that cartridge has always been IMR 4320, or that's what I was told. I have used that powder exclusively in the three 17 Rems that I have owned. I have zero complaints with accuracy or speed with IMR4320. I use 20 grain V max bullets on PDs and 25 Bergers on coyotes. I believe the 25 grain Vmax is a bit longer and marginally stable in some guns depending on the twist. That's what I have read, anyway. Its a fun cartridge, enjoy! |

I've always understood that Nosler brass is "re-branded" Norma, so either headstamp will be the same quality.
I bought some reformed military brass to try in my CZ Varmint 17 remington. Got the brass from "highplainsbrass.com" I too will be loading 17 remington for the first time. Have fun |

Congrats on the 17 Remington. They are rather addictive. I'm down to 3 currently after selling a couple 700 BDLs that I wasn't going to shoot. Still have 3 700's, one in BDL, one in a Classic and one heavy barrel.
I have been using a lot of Hornady 25 grain hollow point instead of either the Bergers or the V-Max's. The HP do a really nice job on the prairie dogs. I do have some of the V-Max's around and my FIL likes the 20 grainers in his 17. You can definitely get those bullets with some speed. I'm fortunate to have a good supply of brass on hand. If I had to acquire new now, short of forming from something else, I would go with the Nosler brass. As to powder, I have used H414, Accurate 2520, some 4320. I would need to look at a table before commenting on Varget and 335. 322 should be an option also. |

All depends what your shooting. I use mine for coyotes. For what is commercially available now.... I had better luck with the 25gr hornadys than the berger varmits. BUT Chan Nagels or woodchuck den are much better bullets by far for predator hunting IMO. If you strike gold you may come across some Berger 25gr target. If you do buy every one u can. I think they are the best performers on coyotes.
For powder, I prefer Varget in my cz 17 rem using CCI br4 primers. Mine shoots under 1/2" @ 3990. Brass??? If you can find it Id use Rem 17 rem brass. Far less expensive than Nosler brass. Ive had no issues with it. |

I have two 17 Remingtons that I shoot Todd Kindler's 30 grain Gold Bullets with IMR 4007SSC Powder. Both guns are stock Remington 700's with only Rifle Basix triggers added. I'm getting 3700fps (3/8" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 Classic and 3670fps (1/4" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 BDL. Tested on 75 & 80 degree days with no pressure problems.... It just a GREAT load for the 17 Remington....

.17 rem.
I like AA2700 with 25 gr. Reed ammo & research, Hornaday, Woodchuckden and VNX bullets. Also Varget has worked well. Start low and work up with these powders. The SPL coating from the Woodchuckden works for me too. Have fun!!! Dave

I shoot a Remington 700 BDL with 4320 and Hornady 25 gr HP's. Works great for me so I have never changed to anything else. Oh, I also use Remington 7 1/2 primers with that combination.
