Plenty to think about then. Thanks guys.
Out of interest, how many rounds do you put down before you clean them? I'm not big into cleaning but it sounds like I need to learn! |

When we are Prairie dog shooting we put 200 to 400 thru the 17 calibers sometimes before accuracy starts to fail.
When I break a barrel in, I shoot until accuracy starts to fail and use JB. After one treatment, most barrels will soon shoot more than 20 before this happens. Later, if you think it's fouling too soon. Use JB again. I use H4895 & BR4s. Remington brass works fine for me. Kenny

I shot that caliber exclusively for years. I tried all the usual suspects for loading, but it wasn't until I went to Vihtavuori/Berger 25 match or Kindler 25's that things got serious.

17 rem
I have shot 200 or so rounds before cleaning, when PD shooting.
If I was shooting paper targets, possibly I would have seen some deterioration of accuracy, but I didn't detect a loss of accuracy on the PDs. Both of my 17Rems are customs with Shilen barrels. |

Has anyone tried Hodgdon's CFE223? Apparently it has a copper fouling eliminator (CFE) and it seems to produce good velocity looking at their data?
Could be too good to be true, but could also go some way to keeping it clean?! Obviously it won't completely eliminate the copper, but if it slows down the build up then all the better. |

Once I got my CZ clean and broke in. Cleaning hasn't been an issue. I prob clean around every 20 shots on ave more due to being out in the weather than anything else. Shoot until you see a big enough change to be of concern and theres where your line is. |

I probably only shoot 50 in a night on a really busy one, so that's not bad.
I've seen in other places that there are folk that shoot deer with this round. What are your thoughts on that? Where I am it's illegal so a non issue for me, but it's interesting to know how other folk get on. I'd imagine head and next shots would be ok at the right angle but that's it? It's a very light bullet for that purpose. |

In WVa, the 17 HMR took the place of the 22mag as the deer round for the discrete hunter and I have been told that it works very well. So I would imagine the 17 Remington will work great.

Really?! When I had a HMR I didn't trust it to do a decent job on foxes! Sure it would usually kill them with the right shot placement but it was less than reliable.

17Rem
I've been shooting the 17Rem calibre for 20 years
I'm either shooting paper or coyotes. My reloading supplies consist of the discontinued BERGER TARGET 25gr., BR4 primers, H4895, and NOSLER and REMINGTON brass I own 3 rifles in this calibre... COOPER 52 MTV repeater with NOSLER brass 21.6 H4895 @ 3967 fps groups .250" @ 100 yds. consistently, Nosler brass has less case capacity with spiking pressures and reduced velocities compared to Rem brass. CZ 527 VARMINT factory Kevlar, REMINGTON brass 24.0 H4895 @ 4066 fps. Groups 1/2" or better @ 100 yds. regularly. Prefer Remington brass even if it is cheaper and don't mind uniforming primer pockets. REMINGTON LVSF factory, developing a pet load using Rem. brass and H4895 Accuracy hasn't been consistent ...definitely the rifle - not the calibre or the the ingredients. Currently anywhere around .500" -.900" groups @ 100 yds. There is no consistency with accuracy at this time. Experimenting with OAL measurement and varying velocities. Cleaning process includes the brushless method with WIPEOUT products. I always follow-up my cleanings with a light coating of graphite LOCK-EASE |
