20 Vartarg, ball powder.
I just bought a used MTV cooper, and had it out today to sight in, and start load development, previous owner had 32 blitzking, with a F 205 GM, and 17.8gr H4198, in rem brass.
shoots very well, but slow, 3430fps over the mangnospeed, I tried a few 32 v-max with BR4 and H4198 at 18, and 18.2, for 3550fps, and similar accuracy, and will try 18.4 and 18.5 tomorrow, case is pretty full at 18.5 Rem brass. I would like to try a fine ball powder, as it meters better threw my harells, Have N120, H335, BLC, think that N120 or H335 are the better choices, any other powder choices I should try, Being that I am in Canada, accurate and alliant, powders are difficult to obtain Any one want to give me any starting points. for a fine ball powder. also what sensible speed can I expect to get with a 39gr Blitz, I have 200 new lapua brass, I plan to use for this. was thinking of starting at 17g with H4198, is this a bit high ? Nice to have a accurate varmint rifle again, Very impressed with todays results, several 5 shot groups at .250-.350 at 100M and several .150 at 50m. After the frustration of the past three months, with a rem and two CZ,s not shooting any better that 1" plus. Regards southernman. Last edited by southernman; 12-30-2016 at 03:48 PM. |

Sorry to hear that you can't get Accurate powders up there because AA2200 is "the" powder for best performance in the 20VT & similar cartridges. Lots of guys like H4198, RL-7 & I think N120 also. Any of these will give you a load that the squirrels & PD's can't tell the difference between. The 20VT will do OK with 39BK, but you need to start pretty low with H4198 & that weight bullet, like you said 17 grains should be OK. With 32GR bullets lots of guys like 18.5 - 18.6 grs H4198. Never tried H335 in that little case; thought it was probably too slow. Let us know if you have any luck with it.

Some old Cooper data shows 20.0gr H335 with 33gr V-Max.
Recent Cooper data shows 18.0gr H335 with 32gr V-Max (I got this from Cooper this spring). I shoot 20.0gr H335 with 32gr SBKs in one VarTarg and 18.1gr H4198 with 35gr Bergers in another. Both are Coopers. 17gr H4198 with 39 SBKs seems a good starting point. I had to turn the necks a bit on my Lapua brass....too tight otherwise. |

20 Vartarg, ball powder
I also have been firm on using AA2200 in my VT or SCC. But I will be giving a try to the newly released CFE Blk. Listed for various small calibers and shows around 3600 plus in the 221 FB in Hodgdon's data site. Should be in the same area with the VT. Bill K

I'm hot to try some CFE BLK. I think CFE223 is one of the best powders to come along in a lot of years. sgtg out

Dang...I get 3720 fps with a new 20 VT using 18.5 grains of H4198 powder and 32 grain Zmax bullets. What are you getting with 19.3 grains and that weight of bullet?
