I'd always thought IMR4320 and W760 were THE powders for the .17Rem.

I think until some of the newer powders came along, 3031 was one of "The" powders to use in a 17 Rem.

I've said this more than once here, so if you're keeping track, here it goes again................

I have tried all of the "latest and greatest" powders for the 17 Remington every time a new one comes down the road, and every time I have gone back to the powder I started with in 1973........ IMR 4198. This has been my experience with at least 15 different 17 Remington rifles over the years, from factory to customs. I currently have four 17 Rem rifles and they all shoot extremely well with IMR4198. It gives excellent accuracy with very good, but not top, speed. IMR4320 is another excellent choice.

Thanks for all the input. I have a couple pounds of IMR 4320 from years ago. Going to give it a try. I also will give IMR 3031 a try.

My limited experience showed a preference for W748 and IMR 4320 with 25 gr bullets.

23.7gr -24.0gr of IMR 4320 was the most consistently accurate for me.

Varget was horrible..........(though highly suggested by some)

My rifle was a CZ 527 Varmint 17 rem.

IMR 4320 with a 25gr bullet has been the 17 Remington load since inception of the cartridge. A little chunky to get in the case, but it does ok out the bore.

I too settled on IMR4198 and also used H4198 as I thought at the time they were one and the same, however, the H gave a little more vel. but wasn’t consistently as accurate.
Used to get too many splashes on fox with the 17 so changed to 20 Cal. Didn’t get splash wounds after change, but that doesn’t mean diddly, really.
