223REM loads
My mate of Walther 22Hornet fame has had his feet kicked from under him and been told that his gun can,t be turned into a single stage trigger so he is selling it and has ordered a CZ Heavy barreled and Kevlar stocked Varmint model in 223Rem.
Now this gun has a set trigger so my question is can it be used as a single stage without the set being used. I expect i will also be loading for him so am looking for loads to use with 40/45gr heads so advise on powders will be lovingly read.. Wally |

I've had good luck with Benchmark and Data 2200 in a 14 twist Brux barrelled Savage.

Yes, the trigger can be used single stage without being set. Some people adjust the set mode completely out of the trigger and just use it like a standard trigger. He will like the trigger...

I believe those Kevlar models are a 1:9 twist aren't they? Might not like the 40's real well. I like Benchmark in the BDL Varmint and 595 Continental Varmint, but they aren't 1:9 either.

I have a 1:8 barrel which likes 62gr and heavier with Varget. It will shoot lighter gr, but but accuracy really suffers.

My Winchester M70 HVSS is 1:9 and just loves 40gr VMAX using AA2200 or AA2215. It also likes 50gr VMAX, 52gr and 69gr Sierra Match Kings. Also have a Sako A1 in 223, but it is a slower twist, either a 1:12 or 1:14, and it also likes 40gr VMAX, Sierra 45 SPT and Sierra 50gr Blitz with AA2200.

I have a 1:9 twist Savage in 223. It is one of the few guns I have ever owned that really loves the 36 grain Barnes varmint grenade. Shoots it VERY well, though I still find the explosive perfomance of the vermint grendaes varies a great deal from batch to batch. Some fragment great, others not well at all. Loaded with Benchmark I can move them out at very close to 4000 fps.
8208 and the 50 grain SPSX by Hornady also works great in most of the 223s I have shoot them in. They are inexpensive, VERY explosive, and inherently very accurate. Most .22 caliber guns I have shot these in will commonly group them under 1/2", no matter what twist 1:16 through 1:7. (Over 3600 fps like in the 220 Swift or 22-250, use the 55 grain SPSX that was specifically desinged for the higher speeds). As said, the CZ canbe used single stage, you can also buy a Rifle Basix replacment triger that eliminates the set function. Personally, I love the set function on their trigger and would never get rid of it. For fine target work or long distnace gophers, that turned down to a feww ounces is a real pleasure. As an aside. I have never seen a Walters that could not be used single stage, and not engage the set trigger. Your buddy might want to check with a smith specialising in German/European guns. Also, Walters offers set or single stage as an option and as replacemnt single stage triggers and have for many years on all their rifles. Last edited by Dean2; 02-16-2012 at 04:45 PM. |

He has also failed and sent it back stating IT CANT BE DONE I think the issue is the age of the hand made gun. Ther is nothing wrong with the gun its just had a new Stainles barrel and been bedded its just the hair trigger thats the problem my mate has been a Gents Barber for over 40 years and i think he has a bit of white finger with using the electric trimmers for such a long time and has lost some sensitivity in his finger. Alan Rhione has taken the gun off him and will try to sell it for him many people like a hair trigger but most of our shooting is done in cold weather and it only takes one air shot to end someones shooting hobby for good. Thanks for all the advice from you all i dont know what twist the CZ is untill it comes but will keep you all informed Wally |

Dean2, what did you put behind those 36gr Varmint Grenades? I tried some a while ago (forget behind what), but they yielded some of the largest groups I ever shot with a rifle! We kind of have a standing joke as to why they call 'em "grenades" -- shoot in the general direction of your target and splatter 'em with fragments!
Also have just a few left, and I'd be willing to try that again 'cause I'm a truly forgiving person. |
