Default 223 Rem down to 221 Fireball speeds?

Hi,
Has anyone got data for downloading the 22: Rem to match velocity of 221 Fireball.
I have a 527 221 Fireball for daytime foxes and would like my 223 Rem. dedicated night (Thermal sight) rifle both to shoot at the same velocities using 40 Grain Vmax.
Present load for Fireball is 15.7 grains of Lil’gun.
Thanks, Ken.

Hodgdon data shows the Lil'gun 221FB max load(16.0 gr) with a 40 gr Nosler BT at 3384 fps.
Hodgdon 223 data shows the H322 starting load(23.5 gr) with a 40 gr Nosler BT at 3376 fps.
Bottom line, it appears that a 40 grain 223 starting load is going to yield velocities in the ballpark of a 221FB max load.

I started off in a CZ-527 221fb and lilgun but was getting wild flyers. I switched from lilgun
to RL7 and groups tightened up and velocity is good.

One of my favorite digger loads before I owned a 22 Hornet and a 221 FB was:
45 gr. Hornady Hornet
16.0 2400
CCI 400
WW brass
3040 fps out of my Kimber M84 and wonderfully accurate.

I don't think that you can reach your target velocity with 2400, but in general I've found that > 75% case fill and 50k psi will deliver the lower SD and better accuracy than low fill, high pressure loads and high fill, low pressure loads.
Along with RL7, I'd suggest H4227, H4198, N200 and VVN120, depending on what you can source locally.

Hi,
R7 and a lot of Hodgdons powders are banned in the UK now.
I’m using CFE 223 for full power loads in my 223 and Lil’gun in Fireball. Anyone think a lload of Lil’gun would be safe in 223?
Thanks for replies.
Ken.

Why are they banned?

In my CZ 221 FB I get these results:
40 Nosler BT 16.0 gr. Lil'Gun CCI 450 R-P 3619fps
with stunning accuracy to go with the velocity.

That said, that is a higher velocity than my load simulations generate, and I expect the operating pressures to be higher as well.

GRT shows at 19.0 gr. of Lil'Gun should deliver the velocity you are looking for in your 223, but I would work up to that starting at 17 gr. in proceed in 0.5 gr. increments.

Hi, it’s an EU ruling from when UK was part of EU.
The powers that be reckoned there are carcinogens in some powders so they banned them! But they still allow factory ammo to be imported.
Some people think it’s just a way of helping European powder sales to flourish. Sounds more like it.

The list is called ‘REACH’ ( Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) if you want to google.

Thanks Ken.

Howdy Johnly,
You helped me out in the past with some figures for 50 grain bullets in my CZ Fireball.
More good information here and it’s appreciated.
Thanking you, Ken.

Hi,
I loaded up some rounds with Lil’gun starting at 17 grains, at 17.8 the primers were flattened and the primer indent looked like it was being push out from the inside.
I loaded some with Hodgdons minimum (As JohnHenry said)
of 27.5 grains of CFE223 and at 50 yards 2 holes were touching, so I will try some more and maybe drop down to 27 grains?
Thanks for all help, Ken.
