Default Flash hole question

Guys,

I have some Hornady 22 hornet brass that I was sizing and depriming tonight and when I got on to a different lot # I was having to force the decapping pin through the flash hole which left a little ridge around the flash hole. Question is would you trash all of the brass in the lot or punch through it and uniform the primer pocket after?

Thanks
Joe

Joe

I would just process the lot and let the decap pin swage the flash holes to a uniform size, then uniform if needed... but certainly chamfer the burrs on both side of the flash hole.

Sellier and Bellot Hornet brass has the smallest flash holes of any brass I tested, a Hornady decap pin would not pass through at all... meaning they had to all be drilled out a little or the decap pin needed diameter relief

The Lyman flash hole tool will open up and deburr any of the standard flash holes in brass, including Hornady, S&B and PPY. I would not use it for PPC based brass, which are designed to have a smaller flash hole/decapping pin.

I'd suggest the K&M tools, they have a sleeve around the cutter to prevent cutting too deep a chamfer on the flash hole.

You can buy numbered drills, #45,#46,#47,#48, sized drills and then find the largest flash hole size in the cases,
and then open up the rest to that uniformed size.

DO NOT enlarge any bigger then required, then use the inside flash hole uniforming tool to remove any burrs.

Tia,
Don

Hornet brass seems to have two different size flash holes depending on when and where it was made. Just use the proper size decapping tool. Larry

Be careful with your flash hole --- never stick anything in your flash hole !
