Default A really nice, but not totally unexpected surprise

I’ve been sitting on an Encore walnut butt stock I needed to shorten and put a pad on. They really look like crap unless the montecarlo is shortened as well. So I finally got round to taking that job on yesterday. It was just another blasé TC “factory stock” that was sourced from Boyd’s. It had the TC branded pad with warning as well as the Boyd’s brand under the grip cap.

So, I finish up the pad and reshaping and grab our Bosch palm sander to take the finish off and beneath the “mud” poly finish that they use to darken the stock, which also covers the grain and figure, it is actually a pretty darn nicely figured butt stock. Not that anyone would have ever know that, had I not stripped it.

I am refinishing it with Tru Oil. I’ve seen that a lot with TC factory stocks. I’ve seen Ruger walnut stocks that looked pretty decent originally that looked like a 2x4 after someone removed the original finish. Whatever procedure Ruger uses actually does enhance the walnut sap wood they use a lot of. That guk that is used on TC wood stocks does nothing but make everything look worse to me.

I’ll put a picture of it up once I finish it up.

I know a lot of folks like various finish types. But in all my years, all I have ever used is Tru oil, lightly rubbed with fine steel wool and hand between 3-4 coats, when dry.
Surprising how it can bring out the grain and looks of wood stocks.

Tru Oil for me too. I did a polyurethane finish last week, but that’s the first of anything other than Tru Oil for me in many years. I’ve started using a deep penetrating oil finish that comes out of Oregon on the stock before building up my Tru Oil finishes. https://www.heritagenaturalfinishes....lts.asp?Cat=81 It really makes the pattern in the figure in the wood “pop.” I’ve been using it for a couple months now. I like it much better than using thinned out Tru Oil for that.

From a mud stock to a gunstock. The uncut stock actually looks a bit better than this one did before I stripped it off. It is a different stock that I posted to illustrate the difference in the muddy finish and Tru Oil. I’ll get around to taking my card scrapers and palm sander to it soon.
