You would need to check factory ammo first. I have shot the 40Vmax factory ammo in mine. I have not tried the 32 grain. Like mostly every custom chamber you need to be aware of it's limits. The Hornady factory ammo did shoot a little warm, "3900". When handloading be aware of the top fps in the load book and start low and work up to top velocity listed for the powder you are using, not the actual load, because you WILL be running higher psi.

This in spades.....^^^^^^^^

The 204 Ruger took from Roy Weathreby's playbook using lots of freebore when Ruger and Hornady designed it. If you go custom chamber, I definitely would not play too much with factory ammo.

History has shown that the 204 Ruger cartridge works well and gives good velocity and accuracy with the extra freebore built in a rifle chambered for factory ammo to keep pressures in line in all rifles. A custom short freebore chamber needs to be looked at as a "different cat" and to be dealt with accordingly.

I would not be concerned with having a 204 Ruger rifle chambered either way, but I would definitely reserve a rifle with a custom chamber and short throat to only use custom designed hand loaded ammo that I know works in it under all conditions.

An improved 204? I'd say 222M-6mm with a longer neck than 204. Neck too short.

Remember the 204 R was formed with 222 mag cases, when it was developed.

How does this compare to the .223? If I was not on crutches I would go look. Mine is a single shot, and I don't get it hot, but I am seeing little if any movement of the throat after probably 400 -500 rounds. I am sure a bit longer throat would help, but it does not seem to hinder it in accuracy. Unless there is a drastic increase in the Pdog population I don't think i will ever shoot out the barrel either.

As ray mentioned, if you have a rifle built with a custom, non-factory 204 Ruger chamber, have the barrel stamped accordingly.
