I get accuracy in the threes from my L461 in 222 from 4198 and 40-gr V-Max. I believe 20.7 grains, but don't trust that, start at 19.5 or 20.0 and work up. I start the bullet near the lands.
I need a stock for mine, would prefer a take-off original. Anyone? Brian |

brians356 - was that 4198 Hodgdon or IMR? Having both, I will probably try both, just wondering out loud.
My Rickard Lee manual lists 21.2 as being tops for IMR 4198, with 40gr. jacketed, at 3,585fps and 48,700PSI - which is under max for the .378" case (.223's and .204's run around 58,000PSI) - but actual make of bullet is not listed, thus should be quite safe for all. Barnes 40gr. HP Varminator (being made again, I've heard) is a wonderfully accurate bullet for me in both the Ruger #1 .218Bee at 3.600fps and both .22 Hornets at 3,300fps. Of course the Vmax and Nosler Ballistic Tips are also quite accurate, just not as accurate as the Barnes or Sierra HP's. The tipped bullets do have considerably higher BC's.

Bullet is moly-coated 40-gr V-max. And I clocked it a few weeks ago at 3700+ from a 23.5" barrel. Primer is Rem 7-1/2. Brian |

TKS Brian.
I have some MS moly bullet spray - might try that, just for kicks.

I also mentioned the moly because it affects velocities and load density - you need to use more powder to get the same velocity you would have seen without moly. So any load data I reference needs to stipulate moly bullet for completeness. Brian |

Velocity is 3750 fps (23.5" barrel.) Bullet jump 0.020". That's much hotter than any load you will find in a load guide, but as I pointed out elsewhere, these 40-gr V-max are moly coated. Brian Last edited by brians356; 04-17-2014 at 05:28 PM. |

Round one of load development done. Current favorite load is 22.0gr of Reloader#7 with a 40gr Vmax. This load resulted in one ragged hole at 100 yards. IMR4198 wasn't to far behind in the accuracy department but I want to do some more testing. Now I need to load up a couple hundred more rounds before tomorrow afternoon. We are off to eastern Oregon to do our part in rapid varmint relocation this weekend, hope to have some in field photos to share next week.
