New addition to the safe: Sako L461
While my time on this site has been short you bunch of enablers have resulted in eliminating one more open slot in my gun safe. I came across this beauty at the last gun show and struck up a deal with the owner. Finally picked it up this weekend and I have fallen in love. It is a 69,xxx serial number L461 in .222rem, original bofors steel barrel with excellent bore, almost flawless bluing with just two small small nicks. This is a couple of firsts for me, my first Sako and my first .222rem.
Now I have some questions I am hoping the fine members here can help answer: My research says the twist rate of the barrel is 1:14 is that correct? For those of you with similar rifles, what are some of your pet loads? Does anyone have a good load worked up using 40gr Vmax's and IMR4198 they mind sharing? Any suggestions for reloading dies other than Redding? Is it worth it for the competition dies over the deluxe dies? Anyone have any they are looking to sale? The previous owner did not know when or who did the custom stock but thought it might be a Fajen. Any thoughts? Any idea of what type of wood it might be? |

The stock lines look like a Harry Lawson design . Nice rifle ,I used to shoot 19.5 grains of imr -4198 with a 50 gr SX Hornady bullet . I wish the 40 grainers we have now were available when I was shooting my 222 .

Thats a very nice looking rifle, I'd be willing to bet it shoots as good as it looks.
Redding dies are going to be your best bet in my experience but if I found a deal on used RCBS or Lyman they would let you start loading for that rifle. All I have ever shot out of my 222 is 50gr bullets and 19.5 gr of IMR4198, the classic load. By the time the 40 bullets came along I had a 223 also so I shoot the lightweights in it. I'd rather put the barrel wear & tear on the 223 rather than my 222. Nice old 222s aren't as easy to come by as 223s. |

Sako Stock
That is a great looking rifle. The stock looks like the
Fajen "Custom Varminter" in my 1984 catalog. Bob |

Fine looking Sako indeed. Like most of the rest of the posters I shot somewhere around 20 gr of IMR4198 in my Sako deuces using 50's. When the 40's became available I settled on RL7 using 22grs with itty bitty holes. The 40's definitely turn the 222's into a totally different animal.
As always, start lower and work up. Your little Vixen will tell you what it likes. Enjoy....Jim |

Beautiful grain, coloration I'd guess it's a stained maple.
Never had a .222, just the mag. So my loads wouldn't help you. Enjoy it, one thing I can tell you that's fact: Your safe ain't big enough!! Not if you're gonna hang around this place it ain't.
