I wish you both the best. I have a british black lab, she is a knucklehead but has the best nose I've ever seen.
I'm a duck hunter, who enjoys wacking a few deer and varmints now and again. If I lost that dog I would probably hang up the duck call.
Hope you have many hunts ahead of you with your lab.

Geoff,
So sorry to hear about your pal.Hope things work out right for both of you.

We lost 2 Australian terriers 6 years ago, one with tumour on the pituitary gland and the other was diabetic. We treated both until they gave up and they were 15 when they went.
Wife vowed no more dogs! 4 years ago she brought 2 Jack Russel x Manchester terriers home and I doubt we'll be without dogs again. Unconditional friendship from dogs.
Again, good luck Geoff; Ken.

She lays at my feet now feeling pretty sorry for herself with a massive sticking plaster on her tummy. Earlier I tried to stick back on a bit that was coming away, she howled with pain, I am sure she would have bitten anyone but me. My fault, never seen her like that before, she is such a loving dog.

Earlier I went and did a bit on my pheasant pens with our West Highland Terrier, she knew I had gone and trailed me to the garden gate.

Hopefully she will be a bit brighter tomorrow.

Thanks for all your good wishes.

A

Aly i feel that heart ache ! I had to " be prepared " for my beautiful black lab RED , when he turned ill . But amazingly he is ok still. But i hope she pulls thru and enjoys more picking up . Time in the field with bestest friends is invaluable . I try to enjoy every day as it comes because you just cant be sure whats round the corner ! As hard as it is . all the best for you guys - tim .

I've been looking at the computer screen for about an hour and I still don't know what to say to you and mulepasture. "Sorry" doesn't seem to be enough, but it's all that I can do.

If I was allowed to pick one fight with the good man, it would be over the short lives of dogs.

Dogs n cancer, been thru that twice.
After the first came back, decided not to put 'em thru it again.
Just end the suffering instead. It's seldom a winnable situation.

Wish you and the dog the best with it. Keep us posted on it.

Default Dogs I've cried about!

George, I have to disagree with you about "letting them go!" I do know that lots of times folks try "heroic" stuff to keep their best friend alive, and have to admit I've done it.

A little Westie 7 month old pup had come into our life as a result of not being able to have working, hunting dogs where we were living. He got sick, weakened and died within a 4 day period. My vet treated him once early in the day, but that same day when he was so listless he could hardly lift his head, I took him back in just before closing time, he frankly told me he didn't think he could handle this, and sent me to the local emergency referral vet hospital. One of his techs got in her car and lead me there, going in to tell the receptionist just how sick they thought my pup was. She must have hit an emergency button, because within 30 seconds, a tech came out and took my little fella back.

A long story, but $3700 and two days later, I told one of the specialist vets to let him go. I had to repeat the order to a tech, as required by the vet's insurance, and almost couldn't talk to do it.

Would I do it again? Probably. In fact, almost certainly, if I was as much involved as I was with this one. I've had to put several dogs I was close to down when I knew there was nothing but pain left for them, but this one was somehow different.

Ali, again, I know how you feel.

Alex
