Default Looking for starting load data for 20 VT, 34gr Varmint Nightmare

20 VT, 34 grain, Varmint Nightmare

Powder H4198 and/or Reloader 7

I thought I would give the 34 gr Varmint Nightmares a try. I've done a good bit of searching but haven't come across any loads posted so far. I believe I read somewhere that some folks are using the same load data as they do for the 32 gr Vmax. I would just like to confirm this a little more with some people here that have actually used them.

Since I'm using H4198 and Rel 7 now, I would like to use it for the Varmint Nightmares as well.

Anyone have load data for these using the powders I already have?

Default Looking for starting load data for 20 VT Varmint Nightmare

I have worked up a load in my previous VT and now SCC that is the same with both 32 grain bullets and also the 34 grain Nightmare.. Start around midway with what powder charged you are using and work up, as you would with any load and caliber and find what your rifle likes. Bill K

I should add after seeing Sherm's post, that I also only use AA2200 in my 20 SCC. Great accuracy and fps.

Default .20 VT/34gr VNE

I've shot a lot of the 34gr VNE bullets, got some amazingly good results with them. I would venture to say that most any 32grain starting data ought to be safe, but dropping down a little more is OK too. If I'm using a powder I haven't tried before, I will load three round batches, increasing by .2 grain increments. Often doing this you will see accuracy come and go and sometimes come again, and that seems to be a good way to find a potential sweet spot. If and when I find a sweet spot, I will repeat the process with 5 round groups, starting slightly under the sweet spot and going slightly over.
"Slightly" is not a bad word with this little cartridge, both in terms of finding sweet spots and finding what is getting too hot. Experimenting with seating depth helps too -- my rifle likes them seated way out.

Knowing all rifles have different tastes, I can recommend X-Terminator, AA2200, H4198, IMR 8208 and RL7 in declining order. I have high hopes for CFE BLK, but have not tried it to date.

VNE 20 cal 34g is an excellent value plinker/small varmint bullet. No BC, pretty much falls off the cliff about 325-350 yds.

As others have stated back off your 32g load a scootch to start, it will probably end up close to the 32g vmax load. Its a short bullet with similar bearing surface to most 32g.

I'd start say .005" off the lands and increment .005".

Default .20vt/cfe blk

Got around to trying the 34 grainers over CFE BLK the past two weekends. LC brass, Rem 7 1/2 primers. Started at 17.8 grains just to start somewhere. That yielded the largest group, about an inch. Worked up 18.2 to 19.5 grains in .3 grain increments. Each three shot group was right around a half inch. Smallest .384. This past weekend I went from 19.5 grains to 20.5 grains in .2 increments. 19.5 was better than the preceding weekend's testing, the in between ones were all just a little larger, and then at 20.5 it tightened up to under a half inch again. No pressure signs, no sticky bolt life, did not chronograph. Most likely I will settle on 19.5 or right around that with this bullet, then back to the drawing board with others. The rifle is a Savage Target Action barreled with a McGowan 11 twist barrel.
