Default Making 17/223 cases ?

I'm buying a set of Hornady dies in 17/223 for a BHW barrel I'm getting. How do I form a 17/223 case from 223 brass ? Thanks

I don't know all the details but I know you will want to step it down in stages. I think bullberry sells a double ended die to go down to 20 then 17. An inside neck reamer may be a good idea to push any irregularities to the outside of the neck. I'm sure someone will chime in if they have found annealing to be necessary. Are there any shoulder changes or is it just necking down?

Your going to really like the BHW 17-223 barrel. I have a 20 Practical and a 6x45 (6mm-223) AR-15 BHW barrels that shoot very well.
I would use the RCBS Case Forming Die 17-223 Remington

Default Generically speaking

Use a .223 sizing die w/o the expander ball. This will get you a few more thou redux. Same if you use a .20 or a 19. Some mention annealing after a redux or two......I have no direct experience - yet but have some 19 and 20s to make this winter. For short cases, I have acquired a 221 FB die along the way, who knows, have never owned one but may help me on a VT.

I also have the PBike257 set of reducers, an improved version of the Skip Otto neck shrinkers I bought from Paul Beceignal (sp?) a year back. These have a 30° shoulder, the .20 being extra. I do not know if he goes down to a .17.

Not all sizing dies are made to same specs or tolerances so you may want to do a few and measure the bases before you do your batch.

Just a few random thoughts from an old codger......have fun, otherwise it ain't worth it, eh?

This is what worked for me. First pass was through a .223 die without expander. Second pass was through a.19-.223 die (got it from James Calhoon) without expander. Last pass was through the .17-.223 die with the expander. Load and shoot. As always, if reloading for a semi auto, fully size the brass. Set your die to cam over for reliabiliy. My gun is an AR with a BHW barrel.

Lightbulb VERY old 17-223 trick.....

First use the 223 FL die, without the expander ball.

Second, CAREFULLY use the 17-223 BULLET SEATING die, without the seating stem.

Third, use the 17-223 FL die.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

My RCBS 17/223 set has a Forming Die along with the FL and Seat. It will take it from .224 to .204. Then I use the FL Die. I have tried various different methods like using a FL .223 without the expander, annealing before and after. Still get split necks. Ive tried many different types of Brass and R-P seems to hold up the best.

The VT will be a much greater change as the new neck will be formed from what was the 223 case body. Sounds like you are set with the reducing setup you have. I use the Redding FB forming dies and have been happy.

Sorry for the thread-drift. It's my specialty as I can't hold a thought for any length of time!
