Default Hornady 25gr 17cal.....

Anyone use this out of a 17 rem?

I'm pretty much out of Berger match 17s and these things shot pretty well today.

Any fur reports with them? They have a smaller hole than the Berger darn near.

I used the 25g Hornady HP and Remington 25g HPPL bullets for a bunch of coyotes back in the 80s and 90s. They both worked very well. Went in, blew up and stayed inside. No runners!

They should work just fine for you. Good coyote bullet. I think the jackets are a little bit tougher than the J4 jackets on the bergers but other than that they will give reliable performance at 17 rem velocities.

That's all I ever shot from my 17 Rem. 25gr HP's and max load of VV135. This give me small bug hole sized groups. This worked so well in my rifle I never tried the Bergers.

Both the old 25gr. HP and the newer 25gr. Vmax gave me bug holes in both the .17Rem. and the .17AH.
I moly'd some of the HP's and they shot perfectly, as before, as did plain and moly'd Vmaxs.
for coyotes or wolves, I'd use the HP- bit tougher it seems. The 25gr. Hornady HP's were the only bullet I could get a triple on gophers with(3 with one shot). The Vmaxs worked for doubles, but if there was a 3rd in line (happens)- he'd not be touched. This only seemed to work with the .17AH - at 3,550 to 3,640fps depending on the powder and load. I could only get doubles with the Remington with Horn. HP's running over 4,000fps- no triples, although I did try.

Exclamation

Not a great bullet for red fox if head shot it will split between ears. Body shots will exit. The berger 25 grain varmint is better fox bullet.
