The 23.2gn load looked pretty handy so I loaded up 20 rounds to head out spotlighting.

A quick check at 200m and 250m:

All looked good so out after some foxes.

After a long night I managed to get two foxes, including this one at around 120m:

Very happy with how the rifle performed.

I then got to thinking about finding out what the max load would be for the 32gn z-max in this rifle with BM1. I loaded one of each from 23.8gn (I had previously tested 23.5gn with no issues) up to 24.7gn and fired them watching for pressure signs. Out of interest I used the same point of aim and got this:

So obviously with this powder and projectile this rifle looks like it might be a hand loaders dream with a wide window of powder charges giving a similar POI. The 24.7gn load fills the case to about 2/3 up the neck.

I managed to borrow a chrony, so tried a few charges but mostly only 2 rounds each (only had a few primed cases left). Results were:

23.2gn - 3811, 3808, 3857 fps
24.1gn - 3950, 3968 fps
24.4gn - 4026, 4075 fps
24.7gn - 4116, 4034 fps

Happy with those results! Now I just need to load up a few more and test over a larger number at my chosen load.

Holy Moly, it's nice to see how your rifles are shooting.. It's making me mighty antsy about getting mine put together.

I'm curious, did you guys order your barrels from over here, or did some other outfit stock them??

I live a couple hundred miles from PacNor, and I've gotta wait eight weeks!!

I've pretty much gathered everything I need for my loading. A hundred new Win brass, a box of 32 gr Nosler ballistic tips, Powder -- at least a half dozen pretty good choices.

I'm set up with a Redding FL bushing die, with bushings in .235, .228, .227, and .226. And an expander mandrel in .203.

I love seeing your groups and load data. Keep it coming. jd

The smith that did the work on my rifle either had the barrel in stock or ordered it in -I think it was the former. Camel's pre-fit Pac-nor was part of a forum group buy. The wait for my rifle was more for the for the reamer which I think was from PT&G.

On advice from Camel I am only using the .227" bushing die in the Redding S type die for the final sizing down. The initial sizing is done using a Super Simplex .222 neck die with the decapping button taken off the decapping rod (because I already had it).

Decapping is done using a Super Simplex .17 Rem neck die with the decapping rod wound down - again because I already had it.

There are a variety of approaches that could be used to size down necks on parent .222 cases to suit 20 cal projectiles.

The most straight forward way (apart from buying an actual .20-222 die set) is to use a Redding S-type die with neck bushes - one to size partway down, and one to provide the final sizing down. For Winchester brass I use a .227" bush for the final sizing, but I don't use a larger bush for initial sizing.

Standard .222 dies can get you started. If you take the neck resizing button off the depriming rod the neck OD is reduced down part way - this is what I do.

I spent a bit more time at the bench today pushing the .20-222 to see what it could do over the Shooting Chrony.

I had loaded one case each using the charges of AR2207 shown below with the 32gn z-max to check for pressure signs shot them first, keeping a close eye out for sticky bolt lift, primer flattening and ejector marks on the case head. No adverse signs noted, and velocities were:

22.0gn- 3948fps
22.3gn - 4063fps
22.6gn - 4104fps
22.9gn - 4158fps
23.2gn - 4263fps.

The resultant five shot group was 0.40".

I also loaded up 25.0gns of BM1 with the 32gn z-max and got 4305, 4359, 4290, 4341, 4304, 4250 and 4290 fps Bolt lift was starting to get slightly sticky at this charge, but primers were fine and no ejector slot marks on the case head.

So it looks like either AR2207 or BM1 will give excellent velocity and accuracy, with BM1 perhaps just edging out AR2207 in the speed stakes.

Sacriligous how could anyone even contemplate changing the 222.

Well done Marcus and I cannot wait to see the pics in its new stock.
