Question on New Pac Nor .17 barrel
Hi guys,
Need your assistance please. I am trying to decide which would be best, a 3 groove or a 4 groove barrel. I am getting Pac Nor's .17 cal barrel in a 9 twist Stainless Steel Super Match. This barrel will be chambered in the .17-204 and I will be using 27 and/or 30 grain bullets (Golds). Finished length will be 24". Any help/experience/opinions will be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Ken |

Same barrel in 17 Mach IV.....
..... shoots as good or better than I can hold it, as evidenced by a bench rest experienced friend putting 4 out of 5 shots in same hole at 100 yards. Fantastic barrel in my opinion. I've only shot 25 grain V maxes through it, but my other 9" twist 17 caliber barrel in 17 AH did excellent with two brands of 30 grain 17's.
Sorry, forgot to add that mine is a 3 groove 9" twist super match stainless PacNor 17 Mach IV. Last edited by Alan in GA; 02-20-2018 at 03:25 AM. |

I vote for the 3 groove...
I think the lands are a bit wider on the 3 groove, which may help the barrel last a little longer. It is my opinion that they shoot just as good too.I would also cut it at 26",you can always set it back later after shooting it awhile.I shoot a 17 Mach1V
that is 27" in a 40X stock that does well from the length.Just my .02c Matt

I have that exact spec barrel in a featherweight contour on a .17 Fireball. Went with a three groove to slow down throat erosion. Aside from that, shoots KGs and Nagels great!

I've used several PacNor and Excalibur 3 groove barrels in 20cal. They have been very accurate, I'll have to let you know about throat erosion in a few years because there doesn't seem to be any in 1500 rounds.

I have a 3 groove also, supposed to distort the bullet less.

I also vote for the 3 groove. Mine and my buddies do not copper at all, with up to 300rounds before cleaning. Mine is a .17Re, 4,300fps and his a .17AB at about 4,150fps.
The throat lands with a 3-groove "SHOULD" last longer than 4 or more grooves due to width factors.

My polished CZ barrel copper fouls very little, which is amazing for a factory barrel. As I noted, my buddies .17AB Pac-Nor 3-groove did not foul the first time I saw him using it on gophers - 300shots that day without cleaning. I did about the same amount of shooting with my CZ .17Rem.
We used Wipe-Out foam overnight soak. My patch came out with blue on it, not as bad as other rifles of mine after only 20 shots, but still had some blue & all the copper was gone form that one soak. Len's first patch in the morning had no blue, just black powder fouling. Another 15 minute soak with Butches & no blue form mine and none from Len's either- both barrels were clean to steel. I then bought a barrel identical to his an it is now chambered .17Rem - no copper fouling, whether I am running 25's at 4,100fps or 20gr. to 4,400fps. Love that barrel.
