Why would CCI tell me
I statred doing a push test on my rf 17s prior to shooting them in an semi auto.
Why would CCI tell me not to do that, it’s not recommended?

I try to push the bullet into the case by hand on each case prior to shooting it in any of my semi automatic 17 HM2 or 17 HMRs. Normally pushing the tip of the bullet into a piece of wood.
Sometimes I even go one step farther. I have scribed a light line on the bullet at the case mouth. Then let the bolt slam shut on its own, picking up a case from the magazine and chanbering it. Then I maunually eject the round to see if my line is still showing (or if the bullet is now inside the case). CCI said they do not recommend it.

Gary if you mean pushing on the bullet in a .17 M2 or HMR to see if the bullet goes deeper because the neck is split that is really odd . Really odd cause pushing on the bullet as a split neck test is exactly what the guy I talked to at CCI told me to do.
As has been mentioned here before it seems that sometimes the story they give at various companies depends on who you're talking to not what the issue really is. Sure messes up your confidence in these assorted tech lines huh ?

Apparently that can easily happen with more than just CCI. As has been mentioned here before....... -BCB

Well that is odd because I thought last night I learned why he would have said that. Well actually I learned two things from that experience.

My question is why worry about it ? Are you shooting match/target where you want the very best group for score and winning a tourney ?
Or are you just plinking and shooting at small varmints i.e. squirrels/rabbits ? Either buy another rifle and cartridge and stop fooling with push back, split neck on some rounds and enjoy shooting, without the worry of push back or split neck. Or just shoot the 17 or 22 rim fire ammo, as is and have fun and go plink away, with what you have. I think some are just making a mole hill into a mountain. Now I am ready for the back lash.. thanks for the posting on the neck tension possibles. Would not have thought that much in rimfire really, so will be watching more closely. I appreciate the concern for safety.
As far as hills are concerned, depends whose hill it is. Not all actions handle gas very well. Kinda along the lines of unsupported rimfire chambering to me. Only one set of eyes for you or yours. |

I think before I would test all of my ammo, I would reconsider shooting a semi-auto in 17HMR.
I have a very nice Volquartsen 17HMR, and it is a fun gun to shoot Skippy with, but I don't think it would still be fun if I needed to pre-test all the ammo for it. Although that might be a chore for winter months waiting for shooting season Allen |
