LT30 in the 20VT
Last fall, I picked up a couple of lbs of Accurate LT30 powder on sale at our local Sportsman’s Warehouse to try in my Cooper 38 20 VT. My most used load in this rifle is 18.0gr of N130 with the Hornady 32gr VMAX. This load regularly shoots 0.3 – 0.4in 100 yd groups. I loaded up 18.0 gr of LT30 and the same load of H4198 and N130 to compare.
LT30 meters very well, much better than H4198. Many of these loads shot under 0.4in 5-shot 100yd groups. I fired two 5-shot groups using 18.0gr of LT30 and the Berger 35gr. My 100yd group was 0.25in and 200yd was 0.82in. This load should work fine this spring when the rock chucks show up. I have summarized my velocity results below. I can’t say LT30 was any more accurate in my Cooper than N130 or H4198 but I like how it meters and performs. My limited testing indicates that about 0.5gr more LT30 is needed to reach H4198 velocities. None of these loads showed any excess pressure in my rifle. I did not exceed loads published by Accurate for LT30 in the 20VT data available here: http://www.accuratepowder.com/load-data/ I shot all of these during our last nice fall day in Nov. Our range is snowed in today and it’s below zero! Reformed Win 222 brass, Fed 205 primer, seated 0.005in off lands Hornady 32gr VMAX, , OAL 1.915 18.0gr of H4198, 3668 fps, ES 51 Berger 35gr HP, , OAL 1.905 18.0gr of H4198, 3619 fps, ES 30

Interesting Walt, I had never thought about .222 as donor brass.
Walt?? I dunno where that came from Bill... Having acquired some Lapua in that flavor over the years as well as some .223, what is your recommendation for ease of processing. I have not checked neck thickness on either group. My reamer is .2335". All suggestions and hints are welcome.

TAJ45: I have made 20 VT from Win 222 and LC 223, both plenty of work. The Win 222 has worked just fine. One batch, I neglected to anneal after forming and had a few split necks.
In the future, I'll be reforming Lapua, Norma, or Nolser 221 brass then turning necks. So much less work. Bill
