Default 222 remington fur friendly loads

In the late 70's & early 80's in Aus we were shooting numbers of foxes using 22.250 & 222. For the life of me I can't remember what the load was or the projectile but recall we would have been using 40 grain FMJ or solids. Very few exits & the majority had to be head shots for the skin buyers. These days we are mainly using the 17teens in 17 Rem , FB or AH. The latter in AH seem to produce the minimum of damage but it doesn't seem to have the legs of the 17 Rem or FB. Sorry I can't help any more with an appropriate load for the 222.

I would think a 35 Vmax at Hornet velocities 3000-3100 fps would work well. I doubt there would be an exit.

Just recently I was on a night hunt in the Piedmont area and watched a gray fox hit the dirt from about 55 to 65 yds. My partner shot him broadside with his 223 bolt gun loaded with 40 grain Vmax's hand loads. I had assumed he was pushing them fast and there would be large exit. I retrieved the fox only to find no exit at all. He told me he was running this load at 3000 fps. I decided I would try some in my .222 the next time I'm in the lab.
