One more vote for TB. It is a far faster powder than 4831, along the lines of Lil'Gun for burn rate, and the faster burn rate of TB and pistol powders for reduced loads with light bullets gives far better accuracy than slow powders usually produce.
I have used it in the 17 FB a lot with 20 grain bullets and it works great. 3.7 grains gives me 1819 fps, SD of 12. Very quiet and accurate. With the Vmax it still splats stuff well up to 150 yards. I plan to try some in the 17 H when I get some time. With the somewhat smaller powder capacity of the 17 AH I would imagine somewhere around 2-2.5 grains would make a great load and give you a fairly full case. Thank you all for that info the 17A/H is the gun i have with a 10 twist PacNor stainless tube so i am not looking for a slower load in any other calibre.
I have about 3/4lbs of H4831 i bought to make some subsonic loads for my 22Hornet but never used and a LEE load data sheet i have for that H4831 in 22H and it tells me that 11.5 grs of H4831 will get me 1,085ft.sec pushing a 45gr bullet so being a tight a+++d welshman i thought i woud try to get a slower load out of my 17A/H with powder i have on the shelf. My experiments with a 25 Hornady hp told me a 10 twist will not stabalize them at just under 2,000 using 11grs of powder i tried 10.5 and then 10.0 grs and both last two loads keyholed i know that they work at 3.100ft./sec but not at this speed. I have loaded up 8 cases with 10grs-H4831 pushing a 20 V/M and will try them for group a s a p if they are accurate enough i will crony them if not i will scrap the idea of H4831 and maybe get some trailboss and try again. As one of you said the V/Max might not be the bullet to use at that speed but its got to be safer than a solid lead 22lr round I will keep you posted(pun intended). Wally |

Wally,
I have some Trail Boss for free, and I'll be coming past in the next week or so, if you can wait that long? Ken.

I think I'm going to start crying....
Trailboss doesn't exist, I've been looking for months to reduce the 17 HH for grey squirrel dispatch. |

Another powder to try for reduced velocity loads is IMR SR 4759. With it, you can tune a 22Hornet down to between a 22WMR and a high velocity 22lr.

being new to reloading trail boss seems safer.
I worry about that s.e.e thingy. Not sure about sloppy powder sloshing around in the case? I will research IMR SR 4759. Thank you for the tip... |

Slower quieter loads
That is another thing about TrailBoss, it fills the case, most of the time just below the neck of a given caliber/case. You can not double charge it. It is a very safe powder to work with on lighter loads, but works very well as to accuracy and the lower velocities we want. Bill K

4759 is fast and bulky. You would be hard pressed to double charge using it, unlike most pistol powders. It will work well too but it is very large grain so it will be a pain to shake into a 17 caliber neck.

A full 22 Hornet case of SR 4759 runs about 8.0gr if I remember right, and a 50gr bullet with 8.0gr clocks about 1500-1600fps. Trailboss is also a very large flake powder that can be troublesome to load in 17's.
