Hi, have a question concerning the 20 VT. I recently picked up a 20" 20VT (Contender) and also picked up some 17 Fireball brass. I used the 20VT FL die to resize and open up the brass. Only bullets found locally were 40 Nosler BT, so to the question. Does the 17FB brass have less powder capacity than 221 FB brass? There is a lot of reloading data with the 32 grain bullets but not so much for the 40's. I am looking for a good starting point for working up a load. I have H4198.
Thanks

Powder capacity is the same whether you neck up 17 or neck down 221. There is lots of load data for the 39 BK in 20 VT. I would use it and work from there. That said, the 20 VT does much better with the lighter bullets. If you can't find them local I would order some. If I was going to shoot 40 grain I would suggest the 204, 20 Practical or even the 223.

Default Give the 32 v/z max a try

Hey Harold,

As always, I love the detailed information you share. I have not tried all of the bullets you have but have had my best luck with the cheaper 32 Hornady ZMaxes. If you send me your address I'll drop 50 or 100 of them in the mail to you to try. My only groups in the .2-.3 range shot with my vartarg were ALL with 32 Hornadys. This includes groups I shot with 35/40 Bergers.

I used to exclusively shoot the 39 Sierra in my 204 ruger (was my go to bullet with Reloader 10x) but I sadly have not shot any in my latest custom vartarg. I'm gonna go pick some up today and give them a run in the next week. Honestly my greatest fear is that they will shoot .1 (or less) better than my zmaxes and then I will be drawn to buy them at $25 a 100 instead of the $12 it costs for the zombies

Take Care,

JP

Default Bullet "splat" comparison?

Harold:

Thanks for posting your bullet comparisons. How would you compare the Berger 40 gr to the 39 gr Sierra for the "splat" factor?

BTW - I really like Panda actions.

Chuck

Harold your posts are very informative. I enjoy them so much. I have just purchased another 20 Vartarg with an 11 twist. I will have to see how it performs.

The one thing that I have noticed loading the 32gr v-max for my Cooper, is that accuracy is best seated on the lands, but there is very little bullet shank in the case, when I do seat to the lands. There is even less, when using the Nosler 32gr bullet. It would be nice if Cooper used a slightly shorter throat on their 20 Vartargs. The accuracy is good as is, but I would prefer more bullet in the case.

I dont know what reamer or throat cooper uses. I would think it would be standard .232 neck 20 VT reamer. Rick in Oregon could tell you all about his cooper 38 20 Vartarg. I think he runs the noslers alot.

Mullerworks 20 Vartarg shoots very well. One of the best performing 20 cal barrels I have seen. Shoots .25 moa and cleans super easy. I have a Pac-nor #2 contour being made to make a walking varmint rifle on a CZ 527 in 20 Vartarg. I will use this rifle for nighttime predator hunts as well as groundhogs and turkeys. Should make a nice lightweight rig.
