Some of the grave markers at Royal Gorge are quite comical

We also took the cable train down to the river

From Royal Gorge we headed East toward Pueblo and our meeting with George.
GPS's are great things, it gave us directions to Georges front door and after all the greetings Helen and I changed into more suitable clothes and foot wear for Pd shooting.
We all climbed into Georges truck and headed out of town.......how good it felt to travel as passenger and be able to rubber neck without running off the road.

Well we saw a lot of Pd towns but no praire dogs,

Now even though we didn't find Pd's we did see some local wild life

When we met George, he greeted my wife, looked her up and down and made a comment "your quite short aren't you" (or something like that) I have to say that was one of those "credit card" moments.......priceless.

Now just to let everyone in on the humourous side of this my wife is just a bit taller than me........and I just occasionally call her shorty.......so when George made that comment I had to compose myself, otherwise I would have ended up ROFLMAO.

Since we couldn't find any Pd's to shoot, George got me hooked on pistol shooting.........since pistols aren't easy to own here in NZ this was a novelty for me.

BTW this is the closest I can get my wife to pulling the trigger on a firearm..

Ian:
Who'd ever believe rocks could look that pretty?
Impressive set of pictures.
Should have taken a few while we were shooting the
iron.
Remember where that gate was on the N side of Watson's
that was too high to drive in? Right along there two weeks
later I touched the back of my head on that bottom wire.
Greg & I got some shooting at that patch too. They'd come
out by then for some reason they didn't like your looks or
something. Thanks for sharing the pictures and your trip with us.
By the way, that's a Walker Colt replica Helen is holding. Originals
were made in 1845. We should have taken that out to shoot too.

Hi George,
Thanks for the comments......Helen says "Hi"
America is a very beautiful place, some of the things that really stood out for us this time was the diversity from desert to praire to rolling hills, snow, mountains, geysers, etc. I could do a thread on each trip we have done to the US.......only if the people wanted to see it.

On our first trip to the US back in 2005, we were amazed that only about 3% of Americans have a passport, where approx 75% or more of New Zealanders have a passport........Cheers Ian

From Georges we headed North as we had booked a cog train ride up Pikes Peak.......Pikes Peak is over 14000ft and offers a fantastic view.

On the way up we went through some pretty deep snow drifts.....yep that's snow outside that window.

Because of the heavy snow falls they had last winter they were still plowing to get to the top so we could only get up to about 12500ft, but boy what a view.

This was looking up the tracks from where we had stopped.......

while we waited for the next train going up to pass us

From Pikes Peak we headed North East toward Wray and a meeting with Jim and his family. Jim was very kind and took pity on the Kiwi in the USA
In this photo he's probably thinking "are you going to hit that dog or just scare him!!!!!"

Well I did do more than just scare Pd's and actually managed to make a few fall over.......loved this rifle, just wasn't allowed to bring it home

Actually, I think Jim said I could bring this one home with me, but I didn't have room in the rifle case..........Jim can we start the paperwork to get this rifle to me in New Zealand.......

Helen just saw this and said something about dreams.......not sure what she means.........do you Jim??

While shooting that 20-222 I found out Pd's were pretty good acrobats

Jim and his family were great hosts......pretty sure our legs were 2 foot longer by the time we left......Helen and I would have liked to have stayed longer........but Jim and Susan wouldn't adopt us.

Jim and Susan thank you for inviting us into your home and putting up with us as long as you could, we had a great time and really enjoyed our stay.......please say "Hi" to Kenny and Zach from us.

From Wray we headed North toward South Dakota.......it was a overcast and wet trip North......but luckily no snow, we stopped in Hot Springs for the night and did a tour into Wind Caves NP.....
Hard to believe all this beauty is underground.....some of what is called frosting

Some of the boxwork that this part of Wind Caves is well known for

The hole was already there, but the stairs were added
