Derimming die steel
Hi
I'm making some 224 bullets out of 22 lr cases. But the derimming die insert is short-lived, has a lot of wear. I'm thinking of making one, but I don't know which steel is more suitable, because I made a unit with silver steel(52100) and the useful life was short, because it had quick wear, even after doing the temper. could someone give a tip? Thanks |

Do you have or have access to a heat treating oven/furnace? If so, A2 or O2.

I have made these for a number of years with 0-1 or O-6 both give great life. Also, pre-cleaning spent cases with on of the SS pin systems can dramatically increase life as the cases get VERY clean with this process. This with the sufficient and even distribution of a good swage lube will really increase the life of the dies.

As I recall, AISI 52100 is a bearing steel.
