Refinishing Old Remington Stocks
I have a couple of old Rem 700 stocks from around the 1960's. Back then Rem advertised them as have a tough "bowling pin" finish. They weren't kidding! The finish is super tough & glossy. Any suggestions on the best treatment or method to get the old factory finish off?

Stripping finish
Citristrip has worked well for myself and others. Not as harmful to use as other products and seems to do the job effectively . May take multiple coats but it works.

Almost any stripper works, just takes multiple coats. Unfortunately, each time stripper is used, it removes a little of the wood. This is not detrimental to the shape of the stock overall, but it leaves the checkering somewhat flattened by the time you get all the finish off. This requires recheckering to get the diamonds reshaped and back to normal again. Of course with the older stamped "checkering", this can't be done, so best to leave these as is unless you don't mind the checkering being flattened. Browning stocks with a heavy polyurethane coating have the same problem.
