Has anyone tried the Winchester Staball 6.5 powder in their 17 remington? They show some crazy fast velocity's and I was wondering if they're true?... 30 grain bullet max load showing 3904 fps. 25 grain max is showing 4138 fps. Of course I know work up to that but has anyone given it a try?

Sounds like it might be worth trying some. Hodgdon data appears to show well filled cases.

It just so happens that I have a 17 Remington rifle, some 30 gr. Berger bullets, and a couple pounds of Stayball6.5 powder. I'll load some up and head to the range when the Oregon weather cooperates to permit the chronograph seeing those tiny pills.

Well I got hold of a couple lbs of Staball 6.5 and loaded some up with my 30 gr nagel's. Worked my way up to a full load with no psi signs and out of 3 loads my junky chrony gave me 1 reading at 3830fps. I've got a new chronograph on the way and I'll be giving it another shot, but I'd be pretty happy with 3800+fps on a 30 grain bullet out of my 17 remington. Johnly I hope you'll still see what you get out of it. I'm wouldn't hang my hat on what my chrony said.

My next purchase(when I can find some) will be some staball, want to try it in the 17,22-250 and it should work in my 30-06. Seems like a good powder to have on hand,especially since H414 is discontinued. I get 3900-3950 with 29gr bullets out of my 26" 17 rem with 414, wondering if the staball can keep up.

Took my M700 Classic in 17 Remington to the range yesterday with a variety of handloads, including 27.0 of Stayball pushing a 30 gr. Berger Match. The range conditions were horrible for shooting 17s, a full value crosswind that was variable and no wind flags (because I forgot them at home).
I shot a couple nice groups, but more than one was a wind tossed horizontal string across the target. The light was poor, so I didn't even bring the chronograph to the range. The best group of the day was a sub-1/2" group delivered by 24.0 of Varget pushing a 25 gr. Hammett BTHP. For the most part the groups indicated the rifle was showing that it is a 3/4 MOA shooter under good conditions. For the 30 grain test groups the loads were: 22.0 Varget, that shot poorly 26.5 H414, about was between 3/4" and 1" 27.0 Stayball, that had similar accuracy to the H414 load. This rifle has a trait of moving the POI upward as the velocity increases. Without having chronograph data, I still believe that the Stayball load was faster than the H414 load just based on the POI change. Hopefully someome can provide some real data. I was using neck sized R-P brass for this testing, and had no problem loading 27.0 gr. of Stayball into the case before seating the bullet. |

Are you seating those 30's wayyyyy out there? Even with ball powder I'm surprised you can get 27gr in a 17 Rem case. Is it a compressed load?

I run 26.7-.8 H414, used to run 27 with 25 gr bullets. Never have had problems getting 27 gr of ball powder in the Remington brass. I can't fit 27 in LC 556 brass formed to 17 rem, but don't need as much to get to velocity node.
