Default .223, 53 grain V-Max, Benchmark?

I asked this question a while back but never got around to the project. Well I am starting it back up again and have a question.

I am shooting a CZ 527 1:9 twist and want to use the 53 grain V-Max. I have loaded 50 rounds from 24.0 to 26.0 grains of Benchmark with a Federal match primer. I didn't have any published load data for these 53 grain bullets so just did the best I could.

After reading some this evening, I think I might have some pretty hot rounds. Is 26.0 grains of Benchmark a safe load in a bolt action rifle?

Kyle

Hi Kyle
Have a look here at the adi website. Your benchmark is our benchmark 2.

http://www.adi-powders.com.au/handlo...5.56+x+45mm%29

I have a tikka t3 1/12 twist and use 52 bergers started at 24 went to 25.5. Went back to 24 and 24.5 as over that the groups opened up. Cases Lapua and nosler with br4 primers. I use the same load for 50 grain pills as well. If I do my part groups are .4 to .5. I did not go past 25.5 and the recoil was noticeably more. Cases did survive no problems. Not much difference between a 52 and 53 but my rifle has a slower twist as well

Hi Kyle,
I don't know about Benchmark, have not used it. I have a Savage 1:9 that really likes the 53 vmax / 26.3 H4895 / BR4. Also likes Hornady factory loads with the 53 vmax.
As always, be careful.

Kyle, I have shot that combo a little & IIRC maxed at around 25.5 in my rifle w/ 1-10 twist. Accuracy was good & velocity was 3500 - 3550.

26.0 gr was about max in my 223 Rem with 50 gr Ballistic Tips and those 53 gr VMax bullets are longer so they might be a bit hot.

Just heard back from Hornady. I used the Hogdon manual for my data before Hornady had published data for the 53 grain V-Max. Hogdon says 22.0 start 26.0 max for 53 grain flat base Sierra MatchKing.

From Hornady:

"The 53gr V-max bullet in the 223 Rem cartridge using Benchmark powder we have a start load of 22.1gr and a max of 25.0gr with a C.O.L. of 2.240”.

The 26.0 grain max is for a 53 grain flat base Sierra hollow point.

The 25.0 grain max is for a 53 grain Hornady V-Max.

Whenever you need published Hodgdon, IMR, or Winchester load data, you can always look it up here:

http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

It reiterates the figure 26.0 gr MAX for 53-gr bullet.

That is where I got my load data initially, but when talking to Hornady, they said the max for the 53 grain V-Max is 24.0 grains. I believe this is due to the length of the bullet when compared to other 53 grain bullets. Even if your OAL is the same, a long bullet will create more pressure because it is deeper in the case.
