Twist rate for .222 ?
Trying to get some opinions on a 1-10" twist with 40 and 50gr bullets in a .222. Good,Bad,any opinions?

Excellent choice
Though faster than needed for 40-50 gr pills, it should work just fine, and allow 55-60gr bullet use, if ever desired.
Is it a barrel that is available, or being ordered? Greg |

For 40-50gr bullets I would go with a 1x14 twist, unless you got the barrel for next to nothing and know a gunsmith who works cheap.

The gun I`m looking at only comes in a 10" twist.

I think their barrel for the Encore is the same a 1 in 10. I have a 1 in 10 in my 222 Remington Mag and it shoots 40's like a house a fire.

Faster Twist Allows Heavier Bullets
For some reason beyond me my Rem 700 in 22-250 would not stabilize Sierra 53 grn bullets, 17 of 20 bullets went through the target sideways at 100 yds. The twist of the barrel is 1-10. The problem was resolved by changing to Sierra 55 grn Blitz bullets.
I would say you would be fine with light bullets in a 1-10 twist. But if your bullets show instabity I would go to bullets in the 55 grn range. Most any 55-60 grn bullets with say H 335 powder will smoke any Varmint out to 250 yd. All my .222 barrels and 22 PPC barrels are 1-14 or 1-15 twist. With these barrels I shoot either Berger, Watson, Sierra, or my own bullets. Bullets weights range from 51 to 55 grn, all flat base.
