Default Crazy Fireball idea?

Hey Guys,
Like alot of people, i'd really like one of the new 17 Hornets. But when looking at the ballistics(20 grn @ 3650), I had the idea...why not just load down my 17 Fireball a little to get the same results. Which would be quieter and even less jump. Would this be possible? Have any of you guys loaded 20 grn pills in your Fireballs at slower (3600) velocities? Is this really a crazy idea??? Thanks

IMR Trail Boss does it best

I load my 17 REM with it to get HMR speeds, and use them for coons and squirrels.

see this load at Reloaders Nest:

I use TB a lot, use max loads for better accuracy. Forget "starting" loads

Default Just my general observations...

The name of the game with a lot of the people on the board is finding the most efficient cartridge design using the least amount of powder for performance. You can of course load down the 17 Fireball to 3600 fps but it will still use more powder than the 17 AH or 17HH to get that velocity. I would say comparing the the 17AH and the 17 Fireball shooting at the same velocities you would definitely notice the difference in report and recoil in a rifle with all things being equal. As mentioned in another post some people enjoy developing these cartridges and others would rather just go with factory offerings. To each their own. Bill

Default Blue Dot

I use to be a Blue Dot guy until I tried Trail Boss. I don't think you can get enough of it in a case, any case, to give you pressure problems. I have a gorgeous Martini in 225Win that frankly I was going to have to rebarrel until I tried Trail boss in it. I don't get near the velocity but it shoots accurately with half the pressure.

What Chuck said!

Please start here with this PDF:

Never compress Trail Boss, just leave a little breathing room, and you'll be fine

!6gr of H4198 will get you about 3600fps with the 17 FB.
Maybe a case full of H4895
A 17HH would save $20 in powder every 2000 rounds. Kenny

Why not? I load a .223 down to below .22 Hornet velocities for some reason.

3.7 grains of Trail Boss Chronos 1819 fps out of a 26" Barrel and will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards. Max capacity is 6.3 grains so just work up the load till you get the velocity you are looking for. TB is WAY quieter than my 22 Hornet using regular powders, at the same velocity. I doubt you will get to 3600 FPS using Trail Boss but you should get very close to HMR velocities of 2600 fps and perhaps a little faser at 6.3 grains. You cannot get enough TB in most cases to create an over pressure situation, I even use it in my 460 Weatherby, and that holds A LOT of Trail Boss..

Let us know if you chrono the higher loads, I stopped when I got good accuracy because I wanted as quiet as I could get that still shot well.

Actually, it looks like IMR 4350 might get you close to 3600fps with a full case of powder.
Let us know what you come up with.
