Has anyone noticed when you buy a new handgun now there is always one spent piece of brass in the box? Most would think it was a test fire. I am thinking the bullets are being collected and inventoried somewhere.

Saw the Napolitano report and was a bit puzzled about how the ATF is collecting the info. The Judge is usually a bit more specific about this sort of thing. He was very vague this time. Bit disappointed in him, he is usually much more detailed.

As to the brass in the box, that is to comply with the laws requiring collection and retention by state agencies for reference. Maryland did that for a while and found the system was a total failure. No case was made from the collection and it was a financial drain on the state budget and was abandoned.
The bullet collection part of such schemes has never been put in place, only the brass collection.

MD was not the only State that found failure in the system, I don't have all the records for the actual numbers. In all the States that have this system NONE have made or broke a case on that alone. There are very few instances where they already had the criminal dead to rights and were able to make a match, but that was far outweighed where the criminal and firearm were caught, and still they could not match it to the record case on file.

The numbers from MD are over 80,000 records at a cost of 2.56 Million dollars.

Too bad the tax payers of MD cannot sue the State for that tax money back. Heck, why not use those funds on other initiatives that have proved to reduce crime? Why did the State not listen to the statisticians that told them well ahead of the program that it would not work? Why did they not listen to the crime labs that told them it would not work?

Correct Steveo and not a single homicide has been solved since they started collecting the fired case data in 2001. Yet theres a warehouse somewhere with manilla envelopes full of fired cases and recovered bullets...

The simple answer to your two questions Ron is that the gun control idiots do not want to hear or use the truth re. criminals and terrorist's and their use of stolen or black market firearms. They just want to push their own agendas and attack legal and lawful firearm owners. Bill K

Yeah, raise yer hand.

But the system is somewhat blind. A while ago I made a purchase at a show in Colorado, which requires background checks. The gent I bought the rifle from said he laid my check, with all of my DL info added on to it on the table and when he went to put it in his wallet it was gone. So I filed a report with the sheriff, told the bank and my identity theft folks and had several conversations with a lady at CO Bureau of Inv who takes care of the security aspect of the check system. She told me there was not any method to flag my DL for suspicious activity, nor even a way to see if it was run through the system. Which is not to say ATF isn't collecting the data.

We've always know and say "Gun control is not about guns, it is about Control"

Unfortunately I feel that most of all three branches of Government are the same, out for themselves and not one iota of concern for we citizens, unless it comes to election and getting the vote. Once they have the vote, it is back to business as usual.

I don't have the answer for fixing it, since all my thoughts are too simple to cover all the bases, but I'd sure like to see it change, slowly. As any fast change inevitably swings that pendulum too far to either side when it swings quickly.
