Default Barrel expectation CZ527 .221FB

Hi,

I am wondering what to expect from a factory new CZ527 .221FB barrel? Specifically, I will be receiving my new rifle and will be taking it to Benchmark for barrel shortening and threading for a suppressor and would like to know if it would be advisable to just go ahead and have them put a new barrel on it?

I have been thinking about building a custom rifle in this caliber, but could not justify the additional cost outlay for any increase in performance/accuracy over the CZ. -The old law of diminishing returns.. A lot more money poured into a custom for probably slight improvement(also, possibly no improvement), over factory CZ.

You can't go wrong with a Bench mark bbl.

My factory CZ 221 shoots damn fine and personally would not rebarrel until it is finally shot out .

Why not shoot it first to see what it can do ?

The first CZ 527 I purchased was a 221FB I snagged off of Nosler's attempt at auctioning firearms maybe 8 years ago, and got it for half of the current pricing.

I got a real test target and it was about 3/4", and shooting factory ammo it couldn't get better than 1" 3 shot groups. I added pillars and bedded it, and I believe it is a sub 1/2" 5 shot gun currently.

My only suggestion is if it doesn't shoot, which I would do before having a gunsmith touch it, is to try and fix that before choosing to keep or swap barrels. I believe most CZ barrels are good quality and don't copper foul as bad as say a Remington factory stick.

I'd shoot it as-is.

My CZ 527 American in 221FB seems stupid accurate, in that it shoots decent five shot groups and almost duplicates the accuracy from my Cooper M38 in 221FB that wears a heavy SS barrel.

No BR match winning targets here, but plenty accurate enough for what I do with the rifle. Some targets shot during load development:

Don't swap the barrel until you shoot it.....you may be pleasantly surprised and save that $400 saved for "other stuff". These rifles in 221FB shoot much better than you'd think.

And some load devellopement.

I bed them all. Kenny

Default If you decide to rebarrel it

I've got a second 221 fireball from their first run that belonged to my dad. The barrel got wet and it was left in a soft gun case by accident for about a week.
Then without knowing, it was put into the safe where the barrel rusted.
When I found it six months later I panicked and was totally heartbroken at the same time.
I spent about five hours scrubbing the barrel out. It's rough inside, but it will still shoot around .600 for five shots.

The CZ barrels do shoot.

If you rebarrel your rifle, I will buy your unmolested barrel from you.

Might as keep it consistent. I got a CZ-527 American in 221FB in 2004, near the end of the first run of them. The wood is good, but has a small streak of light sapwood in the forearm. Never touched the trigger, came with 2.5 lb unset and 12 oz set. Groups typically run right at 0.4 inch for 5 shots at 100yds, using either RL-7 or AA2200 and 40gr Vmax. Like Rick in Oregon said, my CZ shoots as well as my Cooper M21 Varminter in 221FB. Shoot it before you even think about re-barreling it.

Thank you for the responses! and good advice. I'll go ahead and break in the barrel and see how it does before changing anything. I have lots of AA2200 on hand, so I'll see about working up a load with that.

Lil skippy gonna get blowed up! Probably half again in two!

thanks again,

Neil
