NOT small caliber
On Gunbroker I saw for sale a Winchester mod 12, 20ga, # 530844985, with a Cutts Compensator are they the same as a Poly Choke? And does the Cutts make the report a lot louder? I've never had a gun with either. Thanks Bob

Poly chokes aren't the same as the Cutts. The Cutts is an over the barrel compensator. It does IMO make it louder.

The Cutts is more like a muzzle brake.........

My first 12ga has a Poly POS on it.
Scatters the shot, I never could hit with it. Dad got where he nailed a few ducks and doves. When he died I got it back after he had it 25yrs after I got a 1100.k Would like to replace it but, don't shoot anymore so why spend the money?

They were common on the M12s. They were commonly used back in the day to make your field gun a skeet gun. Most definitely they are louder.

As I recall them, the poly choke was adjustable to give you the effect of full, modified or open choke patterns, where the Cutts compensators were fixed, mostly to reduce felt recoil. They both were popular during the fifties IIRC.

Cutts
Cutts compensators had choke tubes that screwed on the end of the brake.

I have my Grandfathers Model 12 Skeet with a Cutts compensator . DO NOT shoot with out ear protection of some type !
I actually made a sleeve to go into the ported portion of the compensator to try to keep the noise from being directed at the shooter. Chris
