Default 17 Cal Cleaning Rod??

Did a search and didn't find the info I'm after. I'm just stepping into the 17 cal centerfire world. Have a 17-222 coming and need to get setup with a proper rod, jag and brushes. It is on a Sako L461 and I'll just make a bushing for the bore guide I use in my other L461s, so that is covered. Looking for recommendations or anything to stay away from. I've used Dewey rods for years and like them but am looking at the Tipton and Pro-Shot as well.

I have Dewey ,Pro Shot and Tipton. My .17 cal rod is a Tipton and it works very well. I also found that I needed a 17cal bronze brush to remove the fouling from my 17 Fireball. The .17 cal jag came with the rod, and I bought some Dewey .17 cal brushes.

Howdy, Merry Christmas .
Not much help to you cause all I've used for many years is the Coated Dewey rods. One thing on .17 caliber rods, at least on the Deweys is that they need to be well supported if you are applying pressure cause they bend easily and once they are bent in my experience at least, they stay bent .
Let us know how things go with the .17-222, fantastic round, bet ya love it !

I like the dewey rod, I have, but as mentioned they do bend. I favor my Pro-shot rod, now days, as it just maintains it's shape. Either will work for you, however. Bill K

SS Pro Shot all the way. I don't care for coated rods or the reverse fittings on the Dewey.

Dewey Rods are nice. I have a coated 17 Dewey Rod as well as plain stainless Pro Shot. I have defaulted to Pro Shot whenever possible. The Pro Shot Rod seems to have a better quality handle, but the key thing is the smaller diameter handle on the Pro Shot Rod. The Dewey handle just clears the stock on my Remington 700 VS stocked rifles. The Pro Shot does it with room to spare, and is a long, handful sized rod. The Dewey rod handle is fatter and much shorter. You grab it between three or four fingers and a thumb, not by a full hand grip.

Leopold Scopes, Forester reloading equipment and Victorianox knives.

I video recorded all of my Highpower Rifle matches. Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle.

Danny,
You just hit on something that has always bugged me about the Deweys and I did not even realize it! The handle is kinda fat! and runs into the butt of the stock....This has actually caused me to bend the rod....
Have to try out a Pro Shot!

Thanks for bringing this up!

Bill

Default 17 caliber rods

Check out the IVY rods by Denny Phillips. Small handle , stainless with great stiffness and best handle bearings of any rod. Little costly but certainly worth it in 17 caliber. Very good in all calibers but 17 shines. Heck

None better in my humble opinion.
