Default Hornady 40 gr VMax vs. Nosler 40 gr Varmageddon?

I have used Hornady 40 gr. VMax (.224) on groundhogs. I have some Nosler 40 gr FB Hollow Points that I have neither shot or used on game. Has anyone here used both on something like groundhogs and can offer any hunting/shooting opinions on them, particularly with regard to effectiveness?

Thanks,

Danny

Leopold Scopes, Forester reloading equipment and Victorianox knives.

I video recorded all of my Highpower Rifle matches. Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle.

Both will knock the stuffing out of a ground hog . We don't have ground hogs but I have shot plenty of gophers with both bullets .Both are capable of accuracy . Leaning more to the Nosler but only due to price point . I don't imagine you shoot as many ground hogs as we do gophers , therefore I would choose bullet for best accurate out of your rifle.

I use the tipped version of the Nosler 40 gr Varmageddon in my 22K-hornet pushed by 12.9 grains of WW296 and lit with a Rem 6 1/2 primer and get 3150 fps. Accuracy is under 1/2 MOA making hits at 200 yards pretty simple unless the wind is blowing. The same load using the 40gr. V-Max bullet delivers about the same velocity, but slightly larger groups. I don't think you can go wrong with either bullet if you can get the necessary accuracy.

I did dome Google searches and found some information. Can it then be assumed that the poly tipped varmint bullets offer more explosive performance than their hollow point counterparts?

Default Hornady 40 gr Vmax vs. Nosler 40 Gr Vamageddon ?

Not sure what other's have found, but from what I have shot between the brands and tipped vs hollowpoint. I have found the tipped, especially the Vamageddon's seem to blow/expand more violently. I really like the Nosler tipped one's, but they are far and few between, for me to find anyway, compared to their HP's. Bill K

I got the Noslers today, thought they were the tipped but got the hollow point, may have just messed on the order form. Now they do not show they make the tipped ones. Probably doesn't really matter, I find the hollow point in most anything will just core a hole through a quarter at anything over 4,000fps, so they should work just fine on a coyote at 4,600 or 4,700fps. Default Honady 40 gr Vmax vs Nosler

They still make the tipped, but I can tell you they are like finding Hen's teeth. HP.s seem to everywhere, but not the tipped one's. And those are the one's that I really like the best of the two. Just have to keep checking and jump/make sure, when a order is placed, that they are the tipped one's. Anyway that is what I have found. Bill K

I checked it out. But as all the rest, it shows the Nosler Varmeggedon tipped, out of stock.. They do have the BT's, may have to give those a try and compare them in the tipped version. I will keep trying, even on the back order, etc. Bill K
