Default Rem 721

I would appreciate some suggestions. I have a Rem.721 action burning a hole on my safe shelf and am thinking about a 22-06 and using VLD bullets in the 70 - 80 grain range. Has any of you guys had any experience with this or would I be better off selling it as is? One of the reasons I thought about a 22-06 is because I don't have one! Does anyone have a better idea?

I used a Rem 721 for a 6.5-06 project. I had a Douglas #2 in a 9in twist barrel installed, Brown precision stock, Leupold VX-III 2.5-8 and it weighed a little over 7lbs. A joy to carry and filled the freezer yearly, it shot about 1in groups with Hornady 129SP bullets. 22-06 would not be my choice for any build. 6mm-06 would be better and I had a 240 Weatherby I made on a Santa Barber action that I liked years ago but then powder got expensive. Another cal. you could use for this action could be the 6mm Rem Std. or AI. This round normaly is chambered in the short action but the bullets you want to use could be seated out far. Maybe others will weigh in but good luck with your project. (Hey look at me I'm a Senior Member now!! I'm even getting old in real life )

Default 721 Action

How about a 224 Clark with 7" or 8" twist and shoot 75 or 80g AMax in it? With modern powders you should be able to shoot the 80g at about 3600 fps without too much trouble. 26" barrel of course. I guess a 22/06 would be a little bit faster but that 224 Clark is a well proportioned case.

Default 22 Cheetah?

Several years ago, when I was looking for a super hot 22 (and before I got hooked on the 17 Remington) I built a 22 Cheetah on a 700 action...if I remember correctly, we did Shilen barrels, with a 15" twist, to shoot the 45 gr bullets. We did 2 of them, and they both shot very well....one of them chronographed at a max of 4650 fps and would stay under 1/2 inch, BUT you only got to shoot the brass twice.....backed off to 4550, it could get 10 to 12 firings before the primer pocket got too loose.....the other one, the max velocity was 4550, and same story, under 1/2", back it of 100 fps and the brass would last a while.

We use the Rem 308 brass with the small primer pocket and chambered the 40 degree shoulder. These guns don't get shot much anymore, because of the noise, recoil and realitively short brass life,(and the 17 Rem....) but for wonderfully long range small targets, they were quite destructive.....terminal performance was well,impressive.... very little left of the crow or whatever you were shooting at. The 17 Ackley Hornet now has our attention, so it looks like our 17 Rem's may stay in the back seat a lot of the time....just my 2 cents worth...steve

1) Never let go of a 721, 722 or 725 Rem rifle - they will never make one that good again.

2) Sounds like you want to build a .22/06 Easling. A good choice for what you want to do...

I own two rifles in that chambering. One is an original Easling that I treat gently because of it's significance (that, and the 32 line checkering on it!)

The second is a beater I built on a large ring 98 Mauser. It has a slightly larger chamber - 30-06 Ackley necked down to .22 I tried a couple of barrels in it, and can tell you not to bother with 1:14

The Easling has the original 1:8 barrel, and shoots the heavy stuff just great. The bullets he built for the gun were 89 grains, and had a long bearing surface. The newer heavy VLD stuff does just fine in that barrel. My beater has an oddball 1 turn in 200mm barrel in it right now, and it shoots very well with 75 VLD's & 62 grains of H870.

Spin the barrel out of that 721 gently & have some fun with a "new" rifle. Barrels are better than ever now, and still a bargain for what they are.

I am shooting a 220 Swift AI with a 9 twist for 75 Amax at 3550. It works pretty well on windy days in the dog patch. No forming problems, just shoot and take out the formed case.
