Default NW ND Coyote outing in FOG on 2-4-2012!!!

I was out with my old hunting partner and his daughter last Saturday. The wind was out of the SW most of the day. The fog was terrible until about noon and it lifted a little bit. By about 3:00 we could see real good. Around 1:00, my partner set up on a little hill where he and I nailed a double back in October and he was calling into the wind. His daughter was sitting right along a fence line east northeast of him about 200 yards and I was set up in a rock pile about 100 yards east southeast of her. I could not see where she was, but I could see my partner on the hill. He managed to call in an ugly, scraggly looking coyote that was limping.

The coyote circled way around to the south of him and eventually started to turn and come towards the north right on line with where his daughter was set up. I managed to get turned around in a very uncomfortable and unsteady position on my shooting sticks and had the coyote in my scope. I kept waiting for the daughter to shoot, but she didn't pull the trigger. The coyote was getting to a point where the weeds around the rock pile would block my vision soon, so I "WOOFED" the coyote to a stop. She still didn't shoot, so I took the shot and just as I pulled the trigger my sticks slipped a bit. I could hear the bullet hit the coyote and down it went, only to get back up and do a couple of spins, fall down again, get back up and start heading away from me, only to stumble again and then start running away. I thought it was a goner. About that time his daughter flung a shot at it and missed and then it turned on the afterburners and ran off over the hill!!

When we talked the situation over, the daughter said she was ready to pull the trigger when I shot! I guess I got a little too impatient. I hate educating coyotes, and now that one will have its PhD.

We didn't see any other coyotes the rest of the day. I did carry on a howling conversation with a bunch of them right at sunset. We could hear howling coming from about 6 different points on the compass, but no takers. Here's a photo taken around 4:00 p.m. at one of the spots we called from.

LeRoy,

Pretty funny, and another good write up.

Hotshot--We are all pretty well baffled by the lack of snow, but we aren't complaining. We didn't have 12 feet of snow last winter, but we did have over 107 inches of the white stuff--a new record for our area!!!

Willyp19--Any outing is better than sitting at home rusting away. It was fun and I got some needed exercise.

Default Starving

It looks like you would be run over if you ran a coyote's dinner bell. Kind of looks like the surface of the moon. They all should be straggly and hungry.
