Federal 210 Primer Problem
I just tried to prime some new, unfired Norma brass after running them into my FL resizing die. I had newly purchased Federal 210 Large Rifle Primers. The first primer didn't seat completely flat to the shell base so I turned the shell in the shell holder and tried to seat it on down. It didn't appear to have seated any more so I decapped it, reamed the primer pocket (no apparent need) and tried another primer. I got the same result, the primer was still high above the base of the shell. I didn't measure but would guess .010 - .015 high. I decapped that primer and tried a CCI 200 primer. The CCI primer seated flat with ease the way they're supposed to. I sent Federal an e-mail to see what they have to say about it. I've got a bunch of Fed. primers I can't use and only a few CCI's that will. Looks like I need to make a run to the gun shop for some large rifle primers now. Anyone else ever had trouble with primers not seating for no apparent reason?

Have you measured the height of the two primers? Larry

Like I said. "I didn't measure but would guess .010 - .015 high." The point is the Federal primers would not seat flush to the case base. They were sticking up very noticeably. So for your remark of doubt I measured a new case without a primer @ 2.220 after running it in the FL resizing die. Then I seated a Federal primer in that case and measured it again across the primer. It measured 2.242 which is a .022 difference so I under estimated how high the primer was sticking up. The diameter of a Federal primer measured .203. The diameter of a CCI primer measured .207.

Primer height was the measurement noted from your previous post: "The CCI primer is 0.1245" The Fed. primer is 0.1260", the difference of which is .0015".
How that primer could then make 20 thou difference, beats me. Sorry can't help.

Just a WAG, but are you using the right size primer seater anvil?

I think I would smoke the primer pocket of two cases, seat and remove one of each type and see what is going on. Larry

Larry I'm going to shoot these loads with the CCI primers then try the Fed. primers when I reload these cases. I've never had any problems seating primers before. The Fed. primers were just bought and I haven't used any of them yet. I've been using the CCI primers but they are old & I only have a couple hundred left so I bought new Feds to see if there was any difference in how they shot. |
