Ruger all weather 22 mag.
I have one that has the plastic stock and a tuned trigger (1#). It is a shooter - 1" groups @ 100 yds without wind using Winchester 40 gr JHP.
I suspect that factory Rugers are a crap shoot. Some are very accurate and others not. The best part of the Rugers are the factory mags. They hold nine shots and do not fail to load consistently. The mag also fits flush with the stock - a feature that is a plus for me. If I were to get a rimfire at this point for hunting with the current cost of 22 mag ammo, I would opt for a 17hmr. It has a much flatter trajectory and more squirrel damage at impact out to 150 yds. Chuck |

I purchased a 77/22 Mag used from a pawn shop when the 17 HMR came out only because it was so darn cheap and Green mountain had a great deal on HB HMR bull barrels. It would run with my light weight CZ HMR.
Eventually my son got into calling raccoons at night and the CZ HMR wasn't doing the job. I dug out the original stock and 22 mag barrel for the ruger then sighted it in at 25 yards was all (it shot good there with several types of ammo) No idea what kind of a 100 yard gun it is but as far as I am concerned its way better than any other commercially available RF or CF on charging Raccoons. I don't really consider it a small caliber so that's one strike against it and not a RF fan (strike 2) but at night when you don't want to worry about loosing brass it fills a need for us. Of course we have a couple 5mm Mags with a pile of ammo that work extremely well on a tuff raccoon but the Ruger holds more ammo and we have spare magazines for them . Also have a Savage 22mag that had worked well and killed lots of coons but it's down fall is the same as the 591s. Barrels are easy to swap and they have performed well for me. Only one I had that was a scatter gun was a 77/22hornet until I turned it into a 17 hornet with no other changes. I was hell on having weaver shim the bolt but gave in to his recommendation and am happy to say that he knew what he was doing when he wouldn't shim that so called crappy 2piece bolt. Some love em - some hate em - sowhat??? No big deal we all have experiences and this has been mine.

I think maybe a lot of the problems with the M77 .22 Hornets was the barrels. Friend of mine had one and it produced lousy accuracy, plain and simple. I tried everything from WW and RP factory, some RWS factory I had along with a wide list of handloads - book and mine - no dice! Nadda!
A friend of his wanted a Hornet for called coyotes, most shots under 75yards so he sold it to the caller who uses WW Factory fodder - those, it put into 2" at 100 meters off the bags. The guy is happy with it.

If the price is right get it. My Dad has the 77/22 in 22 mag and his shoots just fine and so does my 22 Hornet, both all weather models. Neither has been modified except that I bedded and made sure the barrel was free floated on my 22 Hornet. Ruger has always done good by me.
