HBN coating - What am I doing wrong?
Switched from a rotary tumbler to a vibrator as I couldn't get a proper impact coating. 1st time with the vibrator tumbler had success using 250 old 17 cal Hornady 25 gr HP. All I did was rinse the bullets in alcohol, dry, and vibrate for 4 hours. Everything since then has not worked with newer & fewer bullets. I am not using heat and tried rinsing in acetone to no avail.
Any suggestions? Chuck |

It is the mass of bullets that pound it into the surface.
Thats why rotary tumbling works with any amount of bullets. So few bullets just dont do it, use a pound of ball bearings in the vibratory tumbler and you're in the game again. |

Tumbling with HBN
Thanks Chicken Thief.
Use about 1# of stainless BBs. May be using too much HBN? Chuck |

I do use heat. Not sure if it's needed, or what the problem for you is. But as described, it's the only difference I can see.

I use 4-5 different sizes of media - pins and ball bearings. I wash the bullets, dry them and then heat them - 200*. I then put them in pill bottle with media along with about 1/10 teaspoon of HBN. I then vibrate tumble in empty tumbler for 4-6 hours. This is for a batch of 200 17 caliber bullets. I only coat 17 caliber bullets. The pill bottle should spin when vibrating.

For bullet only hBN in a vibratory you need to use 500-1000 bullets at a time, can mix bullets of various calibers/weights that can be easily sorted afterwards. Heat lamp helps I rarely need to go more than 45 min.
New bullets need no prep they are clean. Be careful about introducing any chemical into a plastic bowl that can make the plastic transfer to the surface of the bullet. Once your bowl is coated in hBN and 'sealed', use this bowl for hBN ONLY. |
