20 Vartarg Safety Question
Took my Vartarg out today and shot it for the 1st time. It shot terrific. Now my questions. I used Remington 221 fireball brass and formed with 17 mach IV form die. Cases measured .227 before bullet and .229 to .230 after bullet seated. Cases measured .231 after firing. I also loaded 2 Lapua cases with same procedure and it measured .231 after seating. I am using 32 grain sierra with H4198. I did not shoot the lapua because it seems to me there is not enough clearance. I have a .232 neck. Is anyone shooting the Lapua brass without neck trimming? I hope so because I have 2000 to get ready for skippy. Dan

You can do it with .001 clearance, but shooting in the field like that may cause you to run into problems. Neck turning is no big deal and you will only need to take off a couple thousanths at most. Most benchrest rifles have about .002 clearance and never have an issue. If you do choose to go ahead with .001 you'll just need to be sure everything stays nice and clean. If you choose to turn the necks you can probably get everything you need used for $100 or so, maybe less.

I had to turn both my Norma and Laupa brass for my .232 chamber Cooper. I run .002 clearance with the Lapua and a little more with the Norma.
.001 just doesn't seem like enough...I would turn them. |

I run 1 to 1.5 on my 20BR with no problems. Larry

my opinion
I think your asking for problems shooting a high volume PD gun with 1 thou of clearance. At least if you have a problem in the field you'll know what caused it. I see no difference in rifles with 3 thou of clearance versus 1 when it comes to brass life or accuracy.

I don,t see a problem with the Remington brass because it seems I actually have .002 clearance at a minimum but my question was about the Lapua brass because it seems to be at least .001 or .0015 thicker. Was wondering if anybody is shooting in volume without turning Lapua brass?

+1 on the .002 clearence for whatever brass you use, decide not to turn lapua and its say only .001 clearance avg. What i f one sneaks through that is no clearance at all and your shooting a high pressure load IMHO its not worth the risk. Just my 2 cents.

20 Vartarg Safety Question
I guess from all of the opinions I will now be turning 2000 pieces of Lapua Fifeball Brass. Bought 21st Century Lathe today from John. It cost so much to shoot these rats now I will have to start eating them. Dan

While your chamber size says .232 neck it may not actually be .232, the only way to confirm the chamber neck diameter is by either using a pin guage or doing a chamber cast.
Once you know what the actual diameter is you then know what clearance you have. It wouldn't worry me if there was only .001" neck wall clearance, as long as my case necks were within a few tenths in wall variation, if the neck wall variation was more than .001 then I'd be neck turning, and I'd aim for around .002" clearance.........Kiwi |
