20 Vartarg Dilemma
Fellas,
Have a little dilemma guys, hoping you guys can tell me if I ordered wrong or if the reamer manufacturer screwed up? I ordered a 20 Vartarg reamer and go gauge and chambered a barrel for a friend. He's using Lapua and after shooting about 20 rounds, he noticed that the shoulder is quite a bit farther forward after firing. He called me , we starting measuring and after firing, the shoulder is moving front 30 thousands. We check headspace again and it is right on the money. He already has a few cases that show stretch marks. The go gauge is a .221 Fireball go gauge?? Stan |

20 VarTarg dilemma
Sounds like the reamer is off or it was ran in just a shade to far. How do the fired case's measure compared to the specs on the 20 VT case ? Bill K

The 20VT has a different shoulder angle than the 221FB. May need a different go gauge to get the headspace right.

You need to use 20 VT headspace guages, did you get the headspace guages with the reamer?

20 Vartarg
Bill K,
I double checked with my go gauge again, and headspace is right on the money per this go gauge. The fired brass, using a shoulder measuring attachment on my caliber, is moving approximately .032-.030 forward compared to specs on the 20 Vartarg case. craig55 & L.Sherm, I called the reamer manufacturer this morning, told him what I have, the reamer and go gauge were ordered together, the gentleman says yeah, that go gauge will definitely not work for the Vartarg. He said he would look up the original order to try to determine why a 221 Fireball gauge was sent with a Vartarg reamer. A lady calls back and gives me their UPS account # so that I can send this gauge back and said they will send me the correct gauge for the 20 Vartarg. I asked if it will be a 20 Vartarg gauge and she said no, it will be a 17 Fireball gauge which has a 30 degree shoulder and the length works for the 20 Vartarg. So I look up the measurements to compare and it looks like the critical measurement, base to shoulder is within .0062. I was feeling real good about it till she said they will be sending a 17 Fireball gauge, now I'm not feeling quite as warm and fuzzy, am I worried about nothing? Thanks, Stan |

I think the 17FB is what you need.

Checked the 20VT and 17FB reamer prints on grizzly.com and there is only .0004" difference between the base to datum point on the shoulder for the two reamer prints.
