Default Seeking Sage Advice on .220 Swift

Looking for suggestions for pelt friendly loads (bullet/powder/primer combinations) for the .220 Swift. Gun is a box stock Remington 700.

Used a Swift for many years as a coyote rifle & it is deadly at crazy distances, but I'm not sure I would use the words "pelt friendly" & 220 Swift in the same sentence. Blew a fox completely in half once & made a bobcat unrecognizable. Not sure there is a "pelt friendly" load unless you load way down in velocity. Then why own a Swift? Makes coyote pelts pretty worthless too. Don't have a Swift anymore, as my 20 cals give me pretty much the same range & are "pelt friendly". I will admit, however, that the 20's don't "anchor em" like that ol' Swift did.

I expect the 50 or 53gr. TSX might work better than a cup and core bullet - maybe. Any of the FMJ's might be better yet, but with a 14" twist, might have stability problems in the air or after impact - which could cause almost as much damage as cup and core bullets.

Default sierra 55 sbt

I would go with the sierra #1365 55 grain SBT. Great bullet for coyotes, not sure what it would do on fox. Acts like a controlled expansion bullet. Almost always exits but is easily sewn. Used it out of a 22-250 and if I still had one would go back to it. Great fur bullet. Another good bullet would be sierras 63 smp bullet.

Hope it helps

Brent

Some of the light for cal bullets like the Barnes Varmint Grenade may be worth looking at, my 20BR shoots the 26gr at around 4,600fps with fairly good accuracy. Larry

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This.........

Maybe not what most would expect, but a FMJ bullets can cause very extensive hide damage if bone is hit. Polymer tipped bullets do not work well either, from my experience.

The soft point bullets from several makers have always worked well for me in high velocity 22 cartridges like the 22-250 and the 220 Swift on coyotes.

Another bullet I have had good results with is the Sierra 52 grain BTHP.

Third.

The Sierra is a great bullet for coyotes at Swift velocities. I switch to the 50 grain Nosler B-Tip for springtime varmints.
