22 small cartridge suggestions
Hello all.
I've been reading lots while waiting for them to iron out a few bugs on my account. You have a great thing going here on the forum. I'm wanting to put a 22 centerfire together. No problems fitting a barrel to an action. I'll be buying a reamer either way. I think I'm wanting something along the lines of the 22 Mink, or another shortened Hornet. My intention is to shoot the heavy end of the bullet spectrum at about 1050 fps. 77 and 80 grain bullets come to mind. I appreciate this is not far from what a 22 rimfire is capable of. My inability to buy rimfire has my mind adrift. I realize my limitations. If I'm doing the math correctly, If I shorten a Hornet case by 0.350", I can use an 80 grain bullet loaded to conventional Hornet length. I'm hoping to magazine feed this in a bolt action. Could I just run a 22 K-hornet reamer 0.350" shallow and shorten 22 K-Hornet dies? Any other caliber suggestions for intended purpose? Any suggestions on which bolt action to use? I was looking at the CZ527, The Ruger 77,22H, Remington 799 aka Zastava M85. The Savage barrels appear to be pinned, so I'm reluctant to try them. Input greatly appreciated. Bill |

Bill check the dimension at the .350 point of your K Hornet and compare that to the base of your brass. You want a couple thou clearance.

80gr'ers at 1050fps?
Any 80gr 22cal bullet you find will be a VLD design, how do you plan to stabilize it at 1050fps? I don't know the math behind it but considering the twists needed(1-8") in a std 223 and speeds required to stabilize a 80gr bullet I don't see anything under 2000fps even coming close. Maybe some of the guys that are more "math" endowed could plug in one of their ballistic programs to tells us what speed it would take to stabilize a 22cal 80gr pill. The concept sounds good, just not sure if it would shoot something that heavy and long.

You might look at the 22 TCM! It has been a great round for me. Having a very fast twist barrel made to do the very same as you plan... BIll

The 60gr 22lr SSS from Aguila shoots fine in my 20" 1:9 twist GM barrel on a 10-22. They run about 930fps. I haven't done the math either, but I would guess you will want a 1:7 twist. FYI, a 80gr SMK runs about 1.080" long and a 77gr SMK runs about 0.980" long. Might have some concerns about sticking bullets in the barrel, if you try to back it down too far. And, will have a trajectory about like a 500gr 45-70 or maybe even a mortar. Sound like an interesting project.

I found a data sheet suplied with a set of LEE22Hornet dies and one of the loads was
IMR4831 X 11.5GR PUSHING A 45GR PILL TO 1,085FT/SEC Dont know if this will help. Wally |
