Removing Surface Rust and not blueing
Read a while back on here a way to remove minor surface rust from blued barrels without taking off the blueing. Can someone refresh my memory?

Don't know what you remember.
But, Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner does a fast easy fine job of it. Just make sure you oil it up just as soon as you get the BWGC off the metal or it'll flash rust again.

removing rust
I use 0000 steel wool and oil. But I understand that bronze wool is better because it is a little more gentle than steel wool. However, I've never been able to find any bronze wool in any store.

I used 0000 steel wool and JB's. This was heavy rust on a Marlin 336 that was laying in a Barn for a bunch of years. Cleaned up real nice and didn't take any of the Bluing off that I could tell. Like George said whatever method you use get the Oil on there right away.

Like others, I have had good luck with 4-0 steel wool and oil for light surface rust.
I don't have one of these scrubbers, but the Big 45 pads were recommended by several others at one time, so I saved the link: http://www.frontiermetalcleaner.com/ |

rust removal
I'm in the line with 0000 and CLP or kroil. I also have Blue Wonder but the 0000/CLP works the best.

0000 steel wool and oil was not friendly to my Ithaca Model 37 shotgun.
I think there may have been a problem at the factory removing the bluing salts. I could not keep rust off the gun. Today it is stripped down to bare metal waiting for a new bluing job. |

John:
Bronze wool can be found in most any Boating supply stores here in the U.S. Hope that helps you locating it in N.Z. I’ve tried the Frontier Metal cleaner pads and that’s all I use now. It looks like steel but feels more like a Mylar of some type or some heavily modified alloyed metal. It does an amazing job on the rust and leaves the blueing alone. How it does that I ain’t gotta a clue. Being gentle with it is always prudent. I let the rust soak in a penetrating oil over night and then used a heavier motor oil (30 weight or so) to scrub the rust off using the frontier metal cleaner. Very pleased with results and I’m somewhat of a clod when it comes to finesse.

Stretching this subject a bit.
I let a lovely K-38 rust til it was 1/16" thick all over. Really made me sick as it was a real beauty til then. Reading on the web I found out: "soak it in vinegar will remove the rust and the bluing". Cleaned up nice. Gunsmith took it all apart and said the inside was a mess too. He got it cleaned up and working fine. Reblued it but, the rust pits make it look frosty. Nice but, frosty. He didn't want to buff the pits out and take off the lettering. This is ONLY for such things you WILL reblue, or leave bare.
