Default Nifty No.3

Grandson and I went to Tipton,In gun show Sunday where I saw this unusual .223 No.3. After a little haggling, I bought it for $575 without scope. Someone had refinished the wood adding a recoil pad and a forend cap and checkered the stock and forend. It also had a Kepplinger set trigger installed.

I took all three No.3's to the range today, mainly to see if the new one would go bang. It does, but its going to need some tweeking, best group was about 1 1/4". Fireformed brass in the .204 Wasp and the .219 DW.
I have an extra No.3 buttstock that I'm going to shorten so my 6 year old Grandson can shoot some reduced loads in the .223 this summer. He's been shooting a .22 for over a year. This pic is from Oct,10 we were bustin clay pigeon pieces at 40 yds.

Very nice, rifle and G/son. Are straight stocks like that commonon #3s? First one I've seen. Looks like an English straight hand shotgun stock. Seldom see any #3s for sale over here, or I'd have one. Again, VERY nice.
Ken.

The factory wood for a No.3 is a straight buttstock with a forearm with a barrel band, and they are usually pretty plain-grained wood compared to most No. 1s. The rifle Dave showed in his post has custom wood.

Nice snag!! That trigger is a $200 upgrade. Great to see you starting the little fella out properly.

What I want to know is. Was you able to look the guy in the eye
during the haggle?
Nice rifle and nice grandson.
You always want to teach them about hunting and fishing before
they find out about girls.
After that, the window of opportunity is gone. Kenny

Kenny-When I was looking at the No.3 at the gun show, I thought the wood was No. 3 wood that had been modified. Now I'm thinking Rick is right, that it is custom wood. I've never seen No.3 wood that looks this nice. Either way I knew it was worth the money with the set trigger.
Kenbro- There is usually some No.3's on Gunbroker to look at.

Years ago my son quit going shooting with me when he turned 16 and got his own car.

The Ruger 3 was and still and is one of the best small caliber rifles Ruger ever made. Cost back in the 80's was in the $300 range. Not as popular as the No. 1 the 3 had it's followers. Somewhere I have a 1980's Ruger catalogue that lists the calibers. I know they made the No. 3 in 30-40 and 45-70 also. The boy looks like he does well with the rifle.

Default No.3 calibers

He does well with that .22, especially since the trigger pull is so heavy that he uses two fingers to pull the trigger. The trigger in the No.3 that I just bought is 1 1/2 lb.so he will be able to learn the proper way to shoot. He's pretty proud of that old .22.
