Sicero, As to your question of them hibernating in early to mid summer, you are correct. But, I am not sure that hibernating is the absolute answer.

They pack away grass or alfalfa in their dens, so they eat while underground. If it is a long hard winter that is slow turning to spring, they can starve before the weather breaks.

The farmer told me they were shooting rats during christmas time in 2014 because the weather was so mild. Usually they come out in Feb or March.

Cool video to get my finger itching.

Headed up to shoot them tiny critters ( Skippy) Tuesday with my son. Just setting out what needs to get loaded in the truck currently, always too many rifles to choose from, lol. I need to put them on a lineup sheet and change which goes with us and which stay home.

Yeah there are many species of these and most of them are very prolific. We have the 5 or 6 different species around here. Some are like shooting at a mouse, while some of them are pretty damn compatible to shooting at a prairie dog.
