Default Fireforming idea

I use my chamber reamer to make seating dies, I was wondering if anyone had ever tried using their seating die without innards and a screw on base to fireform with Cream of Wheat in a seating die.

I was thinking about building a system that would contain the COW and not spread it all around and be able to screw seating dies like I make into to fire form brass. That would also take it out of the firearm category.

I haven't figured out all the details but it seems to me like it would work.

I am working with 3 cartridges now, the 17 HH with Rem Hornet cases, a 20 AI Hornet and a 6MM Dasher.

Since so many people have moved in around me I find it harder to find places to shoot a lot of rounds without driving a long ways.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Lowell

Indeed that had been done. I think Rodgervich did that.

My dad used to teach at a tech school in engineering. I remember that they would make ash trays from sheets of metal. They had some mold they put a piece of metal in and a cherry bomb on top and bolted the top down then lite the cherry bomb and it blew the metal down into the mold. I bet you could use a 22 blank and do that with brass from the top of the case mouth.

I read about someone else doing this recently. I think it was NVreloader that told me he fireformed in the die. Not 100% sure though.

I remember someone putting them in a die and filling the case with water, then just hitting a rod in the neck with a hammer. Larry

The method of using a die to fireform brass is detailed in JJ Donnelly's book "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions"

Yup. And if you do not make your own dies, CH4D will make them for this task for you and not harden them. There have been instances of proper forming dies shattering from time to time.

When I built my little rig I also made a muffler for it, it is 4" x 2' and weighs close to 40lbs. I just happen to have the stuff for this on hand, and based on the size and weight it can no way be thought of as a silencer, just to keep it legal with the BATF.
