Default new loads for the 17 v-raptor for fox

just worked these up this morning looking for a good fox load.

10.1 gr 300-mp 18 gr Berger hp 7.5 r 3820
10.1 gr 300-mp 15.5 ntx 7.5 4057
10.2 4065
10.3 4081
10.4 4154
10.5 4181
10.6 4171

it is extremely hard to measure in .01 of a grain, thank god for a good digital scale. primer pockets were as tight as when i loaded the case.
i didn't pick my handle by accident and i think this little ntx will be the cats meow for shooting fox and bobcats. not so sure about coyotes though i did kill a coyote with a 15 gr Berger in a 17 ah. shot him in the collar bone at 50 yards. blew a quarter size hole all the way thru the bone and got the lungs.
sometimes you just have to use what you have in your hands at the moment.

yes the cases are still good, i now have 5 rounds of 10.2-10.6 loaded for accuracy test. any one of the loads would be just fine. 10.4-10.5 and 10.6 went into .50. bullet are seated just off the lands .005. can't wait to shoot something with it, heck anything.

daryl considering there is less than 11 gr of powder in it, yes smoking. the cartridge matches a 17hmr at 100 yds al the way out to 300+ yards. it has 60 ft pounds of energy at 375 which is the same as the 17 hmr at 100

WOW!

Lot's more than I want for vel's.

Hope they don't splash too bad and wreck the fur.

be careful with those .1gr increases! You've heard what I found
with one tenth grain once.

Here I was just donated another 8lbs of 1680.
Still have about 6-7 lbs of the jug I bought on the trip to your place.
That's a whole lotta 17 VR loads.

George as you know from previous post I have shot way more than my share of fox and coyotes. Only skinned one so tearing up hides are not a concern. Actually I want to shoot a truck load of Jack's with it.
18 gr burgers were doing 3820 and 20 gr vmax 3700 fps, neither load was Max and yes I know about you misfortune with the cartridge. Best thing was you were ok and not hurt.

For a while i thought i was going to have to answer my own post. the equivalent to laughing at your own joke.

Hi Bob:

How's your lady doing? Been thinking of calling again then see the
time of day. Tell her I'm thinking of her often with that back surgery.

Take a look at your readings on those loads.
10.5gr is max, 10.6 is over as the vel dropped. What's your rifle this time?

This powder lacks a touch of being equal to 1680, real close though. Don't
believe you could load 10.5gr of 1680 in it even with these light pills. I had
some samples of 15 gr I never tried, gave 'em to Rider.
Once I settled on 20g V'max that's all I wanted to shoot in it and stocked up.
Don't think I've fired 50 thru both guns combined. Just haven't gotten out since I got them.

I have two guys wanting to buy my VR's. Don't think I'll part with them.
I know both have the funding. By the time I add in both rifles, 30 cal can of
loaded ammo, likely 3000 more cases, dies etc it's gonna add up.

One asked about the VR and told him no wasn't ready to sell but,
what did he think of a .20 VarTarg? Came right in with the cash I mentioned.
Only fired that enough to develop loads is all. Less than 20 shots.

you may be right about max load, then again the scale drift may have something to do with velocity drop. I'm hoping 10.4 will be the loador even 10.3 for a better margin of error. MP-300 has been described as ww296/H110 with a coating on it, which i agree with.
i plan to use the lil 15.5 pill on fox and jack when i visit my friend in New Mexico. most called fox are shot at 25-40 yards, jack out to 250 and if i get a stray coyote i'll put it between his eyes.
rifle is a cz 527 varmint with a 22" barrel, James Calhoun single shot follower and a cz hornet magazine for calling. the bolt was bushed by Greg Tannel for a better fit. still using some of the dies built by Paul Rogers. rcbs is making me a custom seater plug for the 20 gr vmax. like you i have stocked up on 20 gr v-max and it has been my bullet of choice for ground hogs.
Alicia is bouncing back strong though i am having some problem with her twisting to much. very little pain and what there is is taken care of by muscle relaxer pills. now if we can keep her from falling for another couple weeks we will be all good. how long did it take for your back to heal to where you could resume normal activities?
i'm worried about the forum, afraid i will se a post " last person off turn off the lights" we need more people to participate.

Nice rig Bob. I have a Cooper that's prettier though, ha!

She'd better pay closer attention!!

Robaxin is the best relaxer I've found.

Back to normal doings? Never been there yet.
At least not since March '85 and three sets of screws!

Still not even with 14 of 'em. Once a back, always a back!

Only shot two foxes. First between the eye's with a .22
last one at 40 yds with a .17 Rem and blew it mostly in half.
Missed one other shot while walking out as it spooked about the
time I fired.

You ever peel the skull off a coyotes head with a bullet?
UGLY connections to the eyeballs.

Cheers down there. You get close to here I expect you to drop by.
NM ain't far. (where?)

Drop in at PVI, call ahead for primers.
Good luck there! East of Lenexa Kans. 1/4 mi S, W into the bent
up metal gate to the tan tin bldg without signs 1/4 mi down in the valley.
IF they have CCI S/p's get me about 20,000, same of LP's.

no but i did shoot a coyotes lower jaw off with a 6mm 222 rem mag, took a quick second shot. i really felt bad about it but it was his fault for whirling at the last second.
not going thru kansas on way to nm, not sure where we are going to settle. alicia is from roswell, i want to live in the country but with no more grass cutting. you saw my yard and know what i mean.
i still have my accommodation from 94 to shoot from the vehicle and it's still good, newer expires. you should see the look on the wardens face when i show it to them and it's signed by the head of game and fish that's been retired for 30 years. i have one for missouri as well.
